What is a K 1, and why is it rare? Saw one for sale at Chicago BMW.

It's a K100RS 4 Valve with ugly body work and paint job. Pegs are set back and can't be moved forward. Has no luggage capacity. I think it's what happens when BMW engineers eat bad mushrooms.

It's rare becuse nobody in their right mind would buy one. Who wants a bike with a yellow drive train and wheels?

Aside from normal K bike foibles, it has the added feature that the front fender plastic breaks.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

On top of that, seeing an extraordinarily blond woman in very tight leather riding on the back of a brand new Blue K1 c. 1990 or so up Wisconsin Avenue was what made me swear that I would own a BMW motorcycle one day Smile

But some owners have done wonders with theirs.....

This one looks much better than the garish color schemes from the factory. I believe that it lives in Texas.

But all of the K1 bikes are "credit card" sport tourers (no luggage space)

One more picture of that custom painted K1- looks pretty good from this angle

Didn't know that- but IIRC the owner had his painted that color from one of the other, less desirable factory paints/decals.

I like the blue/yellow combination.
If I'm not wrong, the K1 was the most advanced bike in ther time.
And a King never losts his majesty.

I have never seen a K1 with rear luggage- was this available from the factory? But on second look, the front fender appears to be non-stock so that could be a luggage add-on by an owner.

Imagine a monochrome version without the graphics but with the saddlebags. Great looking "sport tourer".

It's most likely a K100RS4V or K1100RS fornt fender - like I said, the K! front fenders were notorious for breaking if you looked at them crosswise.

The bags are defintiely a rework of the rear.

Sold it, with regrets, although even then I wanted K11RS. At that point (1999), the price for a K11 was a little too high.

I like the K1, especially the black one pictured above. While the styling is a subjective call, the K1 is truly a unique ride.

I had a set of K1 foot plates on my K75. It was like having rear sets on it. I still have them. I put the bike back to stock when I sold it. I really likes the rear set effect. I was going to use them on my K100 Turbo but instedI will use the set of Baumiester Rear sets I just got. Anyone want a set of K1 Foot Peg Mounts???
