|
|
On the LT I have the sidestand switch connector shorted and the sidestand switch is hooked up to a flashing bright LED in my upper dash. This keeps me from riding away with the sidestand down.
On the RS I just have it shorted. I'm pretty good about getting the sidestand up every time but not 100%. It hasn't killed me yet but it might so I designed a circuit with a six dollar 102dB piezo siren from Radio Shack that I'll hide in the fairing. The siren will go off if the bike is turned on, out of neutral and the sidestand is down.
Note that you need 5-pin relays with an 87a (normally closed) pin on them. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I really miss the sidestand that they put on my 85 K100RS. It was the only BMW stand that I found was the right length and, because it was cabled to the clutch lever, made it pretty much impossible to ride away with it deployed. Look at what they replaced it with.....

The problem with the old one was if someone fiddled with your bike while you were away from it. Somebody really squeezing on the clutch (yes, some idiots will do that) could break your clutch cable or knock your bike over. Also, if you wsere sitting on your bike after putting the sidestand down and then inadvertently pulling the clutch a little you could drop your bike.
I tried to avoid using it - figuring it would shorten clutch cable life.
I'm not saying it was necessrily a bad system - just that no system is perfect.
I wouldn't be surprised if it were possible to retrofit an old one to a 4 valve. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

FleaBay! Where else?
The ones I got for this are Chinese crap but they don't have to handle much current(150 mA) so It doesn't matter.

For my LED projects I use microrelays. You're supposed to solder them onto a printed circuit board but I developed my own waterproof connection process. I use a tack to make a hole in the center of the wires and then put the wires on the posts. Then I wrap it in tape, put it upside down and fill the tpe with epoxy. When the epoxy has cured, I remove the tape and VOILA - a waterproof micro-relay.

Installed this yesterday - works like a charm. And it's LOUD! It was a bit of a PITA since I had to pull the tank and instrument cluster but I have peace of mind now knowing that I won't inadvertently ride off with the stand down. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Why is a relay even needed with a piezo buzzer? The Radio Shack 273-075 draws 25mA max and is 95dB.
The relay draws more than the piezo. (Approximately 100mA)
Surely the kickstand switch is rated at several Amps. _________________ Current Bikes

Notice which relay terminals I'm using - 87a. The relays are for curcuit logic, not current. I want the buzzer off when either the bike is in neutral or the swtich is grounded. When the bike is in gear with the kickstand down is the only time the buzzer will sound. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

If it's the logic circuit you are tapping into why not just connect the sidestand though the Stiebel Nautilus? Not only will you never forget to put the stand up but it might even work as an auto dismount device !! _________________ Larry

Yeah but the Stebel would probably scare the chit outta me and make me drop the bike - hopefully to the left where the sidestand is still deployed. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The relay is needed because the sidestand switch is closed when the sidestand is up and open when down, this is the opposite operation needed to operate a light or buzzer when the sidestand is down. The relay corrects this situation.
I too have done similar only I have used the Red Bulb Monitor warning light on the dash to indicate when the sidestand is down. I didn't need it any more as I have LED Tailight, Brakelight and Blinkers. _________________ Gary

Yep, she's a nag. I don't know how Johnny puts up with her. (Or vice versa.)
When I frisy hooked it up, I gournded it the Moronic assuming that was grounded all of the time. I was wrong. For some reason, the Moronic is not grounded when the front brake is applied. SO the first time I started the bike, puttup the stand and rode off all was fine - until I got a siren everyt time I hit hte front brake. Problem solved with a better ground. (Reminds me of my friend who in high school hooked up the horn on his sister's car to the brakes. )
This thing is loud - it's alreayd conducting some serious behvior modification on me. It will quickly teach me to put up the sidestand before putting the bike in gear. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Pfft! That thing is a Brick of another color! Here is my plan....I start to look for a K75 in SoCal (they are there) and in Dec. when I get back to Iowierd I change my DL from Indiana to Iowa and get my Motobrick learners permit and ride it in soCal until April when we start heading north....find a place to store my motobrick with one of my buddies or one of the KOG's until we get back...then get back to Iowierd in June and take my abate class.... We can only fit 1 motobrick on the back of the truck So, unless you want to loan me one of yours I will be brickless from April thru October.... |

IF you're looking for a K75 in SoCal then you should give JB a call. I was chatting with him a few months ago about getting a beater K75 to leave at my dad's place os I have a toy when I visit. He said just let him know when and he could probably have something for me.
I'll bet youhe can come up with a beater for you. Cosmetic beater, not mechanical beater. Then you won't feel so bad if and when you drop it during the learning process. K75s are a tad heavy for a learner bike so you might want to look at other options too. And don't buy a K75RT, too heavy and too hot for SoCal riding.
I'd also recommend spending some time over at www.beginnerbikers.org. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

As the saying goes: "It's your FIRST bike, not your LAST one."
Your real focus should be on getting a bike that feels good to you/fits you well and handles well for a noob. If you find that right LEARNER bike then skill development will be much easier and you'll become a better rider faster.
There's tons of good UJMs out there that make great learner bikes and you can sell them for about what you paid for them. Think of your first bike as a bike you're renting in order to develop skills for 6 months to a year, not something you'll be riding forever.
Go over to the www.beginnerbikers.org site and you will see this message reinforced repeatedly by the experienced riders and MSF coaches there.
In the long run you'll end up being a better rider, have less chance of killing yourself while learning and it will cost less. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
