Hi all,

I pulled the tank on my K1100LT back a few inches whilst putting in a new clutch cable today. In doing so I've dislodged a piece of dense molded foam type material on the left hand side of the bike. seems to sit above the injectors. I cannot figure out how it goes back.

Could anyone help with a picture of what it's suppose to look like! Thanks in advance

Orinoco/Adrian

Adrian

This is an faq, you have dislodged the heat screens.

It is bedtime here in the UK, but I can take a couple of shots tomorrow if our colonial cousins do not have them handy Wink

Maybe the fiche site will help :

http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47926

Basically, they sit adjacent to the black fairing kneepads (with the fuel/temp gauge), and it should be pretty intuitive where they live - the serrations match up to the ribbing in the air intake pipes.

Let me know, and I'll do this tomorrow 4u.

Just had mine off, the long tails should be pulled across the top so they cross below a flat sheet below the frame rails. The serrated bit (LHS) sits against No 3 (#3) intake rubber at about 10 o clock, viewed from above. The better you get it to sit, the less roasted your nuts will be DAMHIK.

Adrian,

On the maxBMW site in an earlier post go to 11 Engine and then to Engine, Heat Screens and the illustration will show the individual pieces. You probably dislodged the top ones. They are kind of a bear to get back in the proper places and I have seen several LTs without them. I suspect they were lost or thrown away. Don't throw them away; they keep the engine heat off your seat.

I have a sneaking feeling they were put on the bike as an afterthought.

Ed

They appeared on the ABS2 models IIRC.

Not an afterthought. Earlier K fairings had similar air diversion pieces to push hot air out of the venting in the fairing. All of the way back to the original K100RT built in 84.

Thank you all for the help. I would never have found the things in the parts fiche - so thanks Ed!

Mine must have broken as there are no 'long tails' going over the top, so gues I'll just have to squish it in there as best as I can and hope that it stays in place. I dare not ask the dealer the cost of replacement, probably exhorbitant!

Thanks all again, I love K11OG Very Happy

Adrian - check with the used parts yards, and keep an eye on ebay - those parts show up at reasonable prices from time to time.
