Took a ride with my bro last week. We left the Twin Cities, crossed Minnesota and northern South Dakota.
West side of Missouri River. Sitting Bull grave site in background.
Sitting Bull memorial. Bridge and Mobridge, SD behind. When Lewis and Clark came through here the river was much narrower. In the 1950's the Oahe Dam was built. The town, which was along the river, was relocated up on the hill before the reservoir filled in.
Further west, we stayed at Shadehill Recreation Area that night:
Reservoir.
Campsite.
Here's the cool part. Shadehill Recreation Area is next to Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area, which is where Robert Pirsig stopped in July 1968 in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I wanted to see if I could find the same spot in this photo taken by Pirsig:
Forty years later:
The picnic shelter is long gone. Years of drought have dried the lake. Oddly, there has been plentiful rain this year which is why all is so green. If you look closely you can match the landforms on the right side at the horizon.
On to Wyoming and Devil's Tower:
Remains of 19th century ladder (in crevice near center).
View back toward Black Hills of South Dakota.
Too bad j o already found a brick for the Midwest.
Dig the "pan-head." A crusty old free spirit and his hippie-chick girlfriend hopped on and putt-putted away. Peace out...
Next campground near Deerfield in the western Black Hills:
Full of trout, we were told. Bringing the pack rods next time...
Campsite.
MacGyver'd grill.
Angus flesh.
Sissssssss....
Supper. _________________ tlp

Great pics Klink.
Think you nailed that Persig shot, the MTN "notch" in the top right is identical. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Incidentally, Pirsig and his riding mate, John Sutherland, were also on a BMW and a Honda.

Some mosquitoes at Shadehill since we were next to a lake, but not bad. The Deerfield Lake campsite had none - there are virtually no mosquitoes in the Black Hills, due to higher elevation and isolation in the middle of a desert, I believe.
Camping was good in spite of the thunderstorm that blew through at 4:00 am at Deerfield. Had to pack wet tents, then unpack right away when we arrived home to allow them to dry.
I forgot to take photos of the first night's dinner: marinated salmon and potatoes/vegetables cooked in foil over the fire. Apparently my stomach was doing the thinking... _________________ tlp

Very, very nice RR.
I've been to Sitting Bull memorial and twice to Devils Tower.
Beautiful riding out there. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
