I removed the belly pan on my 94 K1100RS today in an attempt to keep the bastard from cooking me. I also uses a considerable amount of heat insulation as the stuff under the tank and side covers was shrunken. Has anyone else tried the belly pan removal? did it help?

I had the same idea a few years ago. I couldn't tell any difference but I liked the way it looked so I've been riding it that way ever since. For me the best heat defence has been leather pants or my Roadcrafter one piece.
Back in the mid eighties one of the magazines, Motorcyclist I think, did a test. They took the fairings off of some sport bikes and found that they ran hotter without their fairings. In our case, the fairing around the radiator remains in place so I doubt it has an effect on engine cooling either.

i have been riding with out the belly pan ( washington d.c. 90++ past 4 days) and have noticed that bike cools down quicker moving off the stop and go traffic. i still am being served up well done after 1 hour of a commute to work . the biggest thing to ensure that the bike stays as cool as possible is check the coolant levels and the oil type. stay away from the 10w-? go with a thicker stuff in the summer and a thinner oil in the cooler months.
i use 20-50w summer and 15-40 or 5w-30 winter.
keep in mind this is a car type engine all the components are seperate units and are serviced as such.

I rode for part of a season without the bellypan BUT it appeared the side fairing panels were flexing outward during high speed riding, so I reinstalled it. There is a definite increase in cooling effect, but keep this in mind if you like to ride fast...
Seems like so long ago...
