I just got back from a weekend trip to Chicago from my home in Missouri. Each way was 400+ miles. Mostly I rode Illinois two lane back hiways and really enjoyed the trip. When I left I had only 1,500 miles on my "new" used 1994 K1100LT and was still getting used to it.
Each way I spent over 8 hours riding. Now I am 64 and until last fall had not ridden any for 25 years. I am equally impressed with my own stamina and attribute a lot to riding a fine over the road machine.
My big ‘aha’ moment came when I was approaching a slight right hand turn where the road would begin paralleling a raised railroad track. I was probably doing only 60 when, big surprise, a deer jumped out from the trackside. She saw me first and tried to alter course. Her front hoofs slid, she did too, and as I passed her in my lane she was dead center left lane. I know had she not gone down my reaction time would have made little difference. I’d call it close enough.
I’m registered for the Rally and feel good about making the trip.

Welcome Cpt,

Those aha moments usually end up in a hospital bed, glad to hear
you made it unscathed. Usually these type of posts end up in the
campfire section, but with only 2 posts you are forgiven...

Which rally are you talkin' about? And why the 25 year lay off?

THE Rally in Gillette.
Just before I quit drinking (a coincidence?) I fell off on the way to work. Going too fast, in a hurry and probably hung over. That crash kind of was the end of the old way and start of a new. I got sober, got married, had children, got divorced (she ran off w/ another) and decided, NOW is the time. Played with a 750 Yamaha over the winter, realizing I wanted a real motorcycle.
I really like the K bike, but admit I would like to ride a 1150RT.

now and then we go to empty parking lots and practice panic swerving and panic braking...

so far the panic swerving has saved us from oncoming traffic who have crossed the center line and are in our lane all because they are too lazy to keep it in their lane... as well as some other road hazards...

had to go full on the brakes twice... once last year for a deer in spokane wa... i saw it... was right next to the road... they say brake to your tractions limits cause they are unpredictable...

i came to a dead stop on the road and the deer was still there beside the road... not 2 feet away in the grass...never even moved... just kept chewing away... the second time was for distracted driver who tried to kill us... they are all trying to kill us...

now cptss1967... lets see the photos of your ride...

Have both, two completely different bikes (IMHO). Did two 5 day trips back to back. The 1150 was with the wife on the back. Really enjoy the K when riding one up. The R makes a nice family transport. One day will have to let one go, just put new Road Pilots 2 on both bikes, front and back, 700 euros, thats more than $1,000.00 by anyones exchange rate, can't handle too many of those kind of up keeps.

Anyway welcome, keep your eyes open, your brain centerd and stay safe.
