Hey guys, I got a flat rear and need to remove it from my K1100 RS.....
since the exhaust is in the way, I cant use a star wheel tire wrench... my supplied BMW tire wrench is not long enough, and I dont have a breaker bar handy.... I was trying to use a socket wrench, seems like a 17 mm lug nut... anyway, as I was contemplating the laws of physics... I thought to myself.... could this tire have reverse threads or some European law that Im not familiar with....
I know whoever placed my tire on the rim last used an impact gun to put the lugs on.... Because I will need Herculees by my side in order to loosen the nuts.... but now Im confused as to which way to turn the lugs... Should I turn them clockwise, or counterclockwise, in order to get the tire off?

Counterclockwise - normal threads.

The correct torque for the lug bolts is 105Nm or 77 ft/lb. There is no excuse for the previous "mechanic" to have torqued the bolts to "two grunts and a fart" instead of the specified number.

Hey, well I know now!.... hahaha
Went to HD and got a piece of pipe to use as a breaker-bar.... and used the bmw tool/lug wrench... and whallah.... presto chango... the bolts loosened....quite easily...
without two farts and a grunt....LMAO.....

Did you not hear - the dealers are cutting up all of the unsold '07 models for scrap - they fetch more that way
Never, ever let a tyre shop use a windy gun (air wrench) on your baby - those things are brutal, and inaccurate
If they don't have a torque wrench, squat down close to the exhaust. A one arm push on a 2' bar will be close enough to get you home, where they should be torqued correctly. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Hey guys....
Yes, HD meant Home Depot....
I might have been 'overstating' the whole impact gun thing...
But it sure felt like they were on there tight....
Anyway, got my tire put back on....
And she rides good as new...
So thanks for the help....
On a side note... When I took my tire off the rear, I did not have a shim... I made sure to look for it.. so it wouldnt fall off... and then Id loose it or whatever... and there was no shim when I took the wheel off... I took the brake caliper off... and removed the brake rotor? (not sure if its called the rotor... the big shiney metal disk with the gear-like teeth on it.. .) And I didnt find a shim anywhere....
So what is a shim.... and should I get one ASAP?

That must be the ABS rotor you took off - did you notice the sensor up close against it? No need to remove that or the brake caliper The shim everyone is referring to is a loose fitment and goes on the R/H side of the wheel and at a guess it's about 3 - 4 inches across. You have to put it back on the wheel before offering the wheel plus shim back up to the bike. I have heard some say the shim either causes or negates a slight R/H bias to the steering. With mine (with shim) if I take my hands off the bars the bike goes to the right (when moving of course!) _________________ 1980 CB900FA
