Hi all.

I've been having difficulties holding a charge in my battery. The results have been about 5 totally stuffed batteries over the past 2 years.. I just thought it was a major short somewhere and ... well Im a lazy bastard and didn't get around to fixing it.

I rang up a new shop that opened up here in Perth, Australia and told the guy that even after buying my most recent new battery that it was dead cold inside of a week.

He immediately said that it is the Regulator Rectifier... So....

can anyone give me advice on how to change one out... I have an e-copy of the maintenance manual, but it isn't specific enough.

I can source one easy enough for about $160 AUD, which is about the same for USD at the moment (lucky for us).

Thanks.

Keith,
The first thing I would do is replace the regulator/brush unit with a new one. Most every starter/alternator repair shop (and some auto parts stores) stock the Transpo IB385 regulator/brush unit. When I bought mine locally it was $24.95 It is a direct replacement for the BMW 12 31 7 739 365 regulator that dealers 'think' is worth $120.

Just remove the alternator and the replacement procedure will be pretty evident. You might want to order the drive rubbers too so you can put new ones in while you are in there. P/N 12311464877 Quan (3).
