This is by far one of the most incredible mods for the LT. My wife and I rode to Nogales Arizona over the weekend, and having the cruise made the long slab ride on I10 sooo much more tolerable. Props to all for the great tech information. One observation, when making the coil connection on the 94 and later models, there are two green wires coming from each of the coil connectors, and they are two different gauges, just tap onto the larger gauge wire.
Larry
Even with the servo in the tailpiece all the stuff I normally carried there still fits

I can't get over how friggin clean that K is.
It looks classic showcar new, especially in the dirty spots like under the seat.
Good on ya for it.

You really can't appreciate the cruise until you have it - best mod ever if you ask me.

I have detailed install photos, let me know when you want to install one, and I can walk you through it, it is not hard at all. The cable bracket is right from the kit, and I slotted the holes on the bracket, lossened two of the rail screws and slid the bracket over the screws, it was easy. Routing the cable and hoses from the servo requires notching the tailpiece base, no big deal. _________________ Larry

I will take you up on that one day mate.
Right now things are a bit tight, new job, just moved, etc.
Gonna be oil, brakes and tires only for a while. (And new speakers and fork springs) _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

The new version doesn't have that big servo can - it uses an electronic control. _________________ Jim

Can you send me a link where to find it? All I have seen are versions with smaller servos.
Thanks,

OOPS! My bad. You're right - they still have the can.
I'm sure I was reading a description of a system that didn't have the can. I'll have to do some checking.
At any rate, there is plenty of room in the left front fairing (at least on the LT) for the servo - in front of the radio bucket. _________________ Jim

There's a place in Australia or NZ that sells electronic motorcycle cruise control units. But they cost about $500 bucks. For that price I'll pay $100 and deal with the vacuum servo. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Folks
Unless I'm mistaken, the unit which many of you have successfully fitted is actually manufactured in the US by Rostra :
http://www.rostra.com/cruise-control.htm
There are two units - vacuum and electric - see link at bottom of the page.
The install instructions for each model are also posted on the product page.
Your friendly local Rostra agent will have a selection of control units (the trade box does not have a control included)
I bought a bunch of the vacuum model, probably 10 years ago, when cruise was a rare novelty in the UK.
In those days, they retailed for £199, plus fitting - easy money.
I may still have one or two stashed away, cruise is factory fit nowadays.
That the design has not changed in 10 years is a testament to how simple and robust it is _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Hi Larry,
I have my unit still in the box awaiting install. Did you install a vacuum canister and if so where? It looks like you painted the control housing black, did you and with what kind of paint? What GPS mount is that above the gauges? I've looked for a GPS mount like that but never found it; can you tell me where to look? Did you tap into both coils or only the larger wire of one of them? What are the 2 add-on guages indicating that you mounted? Your bike is looking very clean; nice install.

You don't really need the vacuum reserve cannister. I've removed mine from the LT and never bothered on my K100RS4V or my K1100
RS. The only reason I did it in the first place is that every other motorcycle install I found on the Itnernet had it. Our bikes seem to have more than enough vacuum w/o it.
Krylon Fusion Satin Black is a good paint as it's made to adhere to plastics. It's very hard to find but if you go to a Sherwin Williams paint store they can order it for you as they own that brand. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

No vacuum canister needed, that makes things easier. I've seem that paint advertised for plastics but wanted to make sure. Is tapping into one coil good, or should it be both? Still curious about the gauges and GPS mount.

Just one coil is fine. If you're tried to tap into both coils without using diodes you would probably cause bad things to happen in your engine or the electrics of the bike.
All it needs is one coil to know the engine RPM. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the compliment. It's a great bike, and seems to just get better.
After 1500 miles last weekend I am considering the vacuum canister, there is a lag before the cruise engages. when I am riding solo it's not a problem, I just hold the throttle after setting the cruise and take my hand off after I feel the throttle move. Sometimes it engages quickly, other times not so, and if I take my hand off prematurely the stumble can be abrupt. No worries when i am riding solo, but with my wife on the back, the 80mph stumble can startle her. Just a consideration at this point, I am adjusting well to the idiosyncracies of the control.
The paint I used on the control is plasti-kote ULTRA ENAMEL, #1103 Satin Black. I lightly sanded the housing with #1000 steel wool wetted with mineral spirits. The paint went on very even and dried to the touch within an hour. I let it sit overnight before assembly. It really is nice flowing paint.
The gauges are 2" VDO and the housings are steel torpedos. I bought them from North Hollywood Speedometer. www.nhspeedometer.com. They are fuel pressure and oil pressure. Fuel pressure averages 30-33psi, oil pressure 60-65psi.
I made the GPS mount from 1/2" solid aluminum round bar. It has been on the bike now for nearly 30K miles and is very stable. It is attached with the two dash underside screws (Drilled and tapped with threaded inserts for 10-32 screws) There is a third mounting point that attaches to the top front of the dash with a piece of 1/2" X 1/8" flat stock as a backing support inside the dash. The antennas mounted on the bracket are for XM Satellite and the GPS and are held in place with 3M double-sided adhesive tape. (The 2820 has a built-in antenna so I am not using the external antenna now. The GPS in the picture is a 2730, I replaced it with the 2820 last year for the Bluetooth feature) The NavTrac Garmin GXM30 reciever is mounted inside the fairing on the side of the right bucket. Reception is very good. I plan to make up a few more brackets soon, I'll let you know when I do.
Cheers, _________________ Larry
