RS: After searching here, it appears as though the only way to replace the RS headlight lens is to remove the whole frickin' fairing. Anybody ever figured out how to do it w/o removing the whole fairing?

LT: Can I get to the headlight to replace the lens if I just remove the inner upper dash panel?

The reason I ask is that I found some LED strips that I think will be perfect for replacing the parking light above the headlight. Your bike can never have too many LEDs you know. Rolling Eyes

The whole fuggin upper fairing has to come off.

Be sure to also replace the gasket while you're in there.

No 8 isn't THAT big of a deal.

If the whole frickin' fairing has to come off to replace the RS lens, then I'll skip my LED project on that bike. WTF is up with that? Evil or Very Mad

I was talking about #6

Yeah, #8 is fairly improtant I would think it's important enough that water could likely get where it shouldn't and cause you to trash an H4. Carry a spare

But if you're getting that much water in that area then it could possibly short even with #8 installed. I suspect it would blow a fuse before it burns a bulb - but who knows?

I'm a firm believer in carrying a light kit. On my K75RT, my low beam went out. Didn't have a spare. BUT, the guy who told me about my low beam being out at a view point was carrying a spare that he gave to me. Even if mine doesn't blow, I can return the favor to someone else.

My K needs work with the 10-11-15 assembly that adjusts beam level. It is currently gerry-rigged in a usable position but is no longer adjustable. A winter project that's probably not going to happen.

It IS possible to replace the RS headlight lens without removing the fairing. All I had to remove were the inner fairing parts, windscreen, and the black panel under the headlight. To remove the reflector bucket it looks like you would probably have to remove the main fairing body though.

Want proof?

You could also do the quick RS fairing removal trick
- remove the kneepads
- remove the gauges
- unplug all the wiring
- remove the main 4 bolts (frame tree from steering head) and 2 for the sides
- remove all the screws from the upper fairing to the sides/lowers
- release screws either side of fork "holes" that connect to the two "tabs" on the radiator cowl
- slide top fairing forward and off.

The sides/bellypan/radiator grille doesn't have to come off; it ends up supported by the two brackets to the back edges of the side panels and the bottom of the radiator grille bearing on the camchain cover.... Got to do this too many times trying to sort the HID out.

OK, I've also figured out how to get the LT lens off w/o removing the fairing.

1) Pull the radio.

2) Remove the inner upper panel.

3) Revmoe the windscreen.

3) Remove the windscreen base. (I didn't know until today that electric windscreen base and all comes off as a unit.) Remember to unplug ithe wiring connector near the motor first.

4) Remove the black plastic panel on the underside of the fairing.

5) Remove the two upper screws holding the headlight assembly to the fairing. This is best done with a stubby screwdriver. Remove the bottom middle screw holding the headlight assembly to the fairing. The headlight assembly is now free to move about.

6) Push the headlght back a little and pop the six clips holding the headlight lens to the base. Just pry them off w/ an ice pick or small normal scrwedriver.

7) It takes some moving around of the headlight but the lens can come out of the headlight hole.

8 ) Reassembly is the reverse. Remember to route the drain hoses through their clips.

Would I be able to reach the headlight aiming mechanism to replace a couple of things through the opening?

Yea, that's how I got to the back of the instrument cluster to install your LED backlight kit. Made install pretty simple. Smile

Wish you had posted that about three weeks ago. Laughing Laughing Laughing

( Not that big a deal, already had the tank and left side panel off, adding relays and adjusting valves, etc etc.)

I've had a new lens on the shelf for several months, didn't want to go through all the work to replace it unless there was some other stuff to do at the same time. A little rtv on the crack to keep the rain at and kept going.
