Hi!
I'm a new member from Brazil, São Paulo.
Last weekend mu 1994 K1100LT SE, during a hard acceleration in 2° gear, in a abrupt way was dead, including the fuel level and temperature gauge; only the dash lights stayed on.
I have this BMW for the last year and rode some 14k miles in this period.
I tryed to restart the bike several times, but withouth success.
I pulled the bike to the side of the road, with the ignition on, and during this I felt the ABS checking (the "cleck-cleck" in the brake lever), and after that, in the next try, the bike started promptly and until now the problem is solved spontaneously.
I thought in that moment that a fuse was burned, but obviosly that not happened.
I ride very often and hard (long periods) with my LT, and I'm afraid that that "bug" return in a more permanent way, in a wrong place.
I wonder if some friend here in the board had passed a similar problem, or if someone have a light for me.
Was the ABS involved?
Thanks in avance and in the next days I'll post smoe pictures on my 6.500miles lone trip to Santiago, Chile, in the pictures topic.
Guilherme.

My first guess would be the sidestand switch. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

FlyingDuck, the side stand was up, for sure, because I was accelerating in second from a signal stop, and already put first, and during the hard lauch, I can't imagine a way to the side stand open.
Off the Grid, Araras is a nice place, and is 100miles from SP. That's a good way to ride!
Thanks for the wellcome!

Sidestand switches can be finicky though - regardless of whether the sidestand is actually down or not. And if everything just cut out like that then that's what might do it.
If I were you, I'd see if the sidestand being down causes the gauges to stop working as you described. I think that might confirm that it is the sidestand swich.
The other possible problem is the Hall Effect Sensor(timing sensor) going bad but I don't see how that would cut power to your gauges.
(I hate the sidestand switch, I've disabled it on both of my bikes.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I doubt it's the hall sensor, as the temperature gauge etc also died.
the sidestandswitch may indeed be bad, or it may be a intermittent break in the wiring to the ignition lock.
some simple checks would be to turn the ignition on, use both brakes to turn the red indicator light off. Then take hold of the wire bundle to the lock and flexing it, while looking at the gauges. any change and'you found it. Then the same with the sidestand switch and wiring and you got a good chance of finding it.

I had the same problem a while ago - disabling the sidestand switch was the cure in my case to. The switch had gone intermittent and it would kill the engine when going over a bump or even under acceleration. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

Now, to me, is clear that the switch was the cause!
I'll disable this thing in my K too.
Thanks for the help, friends!

My ingition switch went bad and doing the same thing. It was very sensitive, justg a little movement would break contact.
The switch has multiple contacts in the ON position, so it operates the aux system as well as the Ignition system. |

easy does it. Before disabling things, it may be wise to see if the problem is actually in the sidestandswitch. After checking the wiring diagram it sounds like the power from the motronic relay was cut. The power to that relay coil flows through the kill switch, the ground is made through the sidestandswitch.
Soo, I recommend examinig your kill switch as well. take the switch of the handlebar, look in the back of the kill switch. A lot of green stuff there is a sure sign of trouble.
I had a bad switch a couple of years ago. It would run fine, until the slightes touch was made to the switch, disabling the bike. A good clean of the contacts cured it.
So, thorougly check kill switch and sidestandswitch and you should be all right. (yeas a flaky motronic relay would be a candidate as well, but one I consider a lot less likely than the beforementioned parts)

Johnny - who stole your centerstand and steering lock? Those aren't farkles - they're original parts... _________________ Jim

Yes, Daniël, check the kill switch is a good idea! Here in Brazil I ride very often in the rain, and a problem in that eletronic part that is alway exposed to the water is probable!
And owrstrich, my LT came with the canterstand and steering lock! Excepting the HP2, I believe almost every BMW came from the factory with a centerstand.

It has been said that his aftermarket seat resembles the reproductive organ of a female Sasquawatch. How someone would know what that looks like is beyond me! _________________ Steve
