Park your car, back seat loaded with groceries, beside your bike. Open the car door and hoist out a heavy bag of soup cans. Whilst trying to avoid scratching the paint or spilling the tins, inadvertently back into the bike mirror with your butt. I find this consistently knocks the mirror off. |

Another way the mirror can come off is let's say for example, your lover rides back into the garage after a ride on some sweet dirt roads and clips your beloved K-bikes mirror.
Then calls you out to take a pic for this thread.
Note the extended wire
Note the little bit of grease on the studs.
Align the studs with the cups and gently bump the mirror with your other hand.

I have some braided steel leashes on my K11RS mirrors that I stole from my parts RS. Easier and cheaper is what I did on my K100RS4V - just used some nylon paracord. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Cool.
The longer wires were added to assist with re-mounting the mirrors. The prior wires were so short they made it nearly impossibe to make the connection. No room for my fingers. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

My dad likes to smack my right mirror off with his rear door when I have my bike in the side of his garage in Rancho Mirage. He's done my K!00RS4V once and just recently my K1100RS - I"m very thankful I put leashes on my mirros.
I'd recommend using some nylon rope to make your own leashes as those electrical connectors will pull out and let the mirror smash to the ground.
I wish it were that easy on an LT 'cuz I'd like leashes on those mirrors too. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Those were so pretty funny replies - THANKS!
I guess I should of been more precise with the question: I did a search and found out how to take them off the bike from earlier posts. My question should have been worded ā
How do you take the glass section out of the mirror so I can paint behind the glass? I found a little āCā clip inside that goes around a stud that sticks thru the plastic. I took that off and pushed on the stud but nothing moved. I noticed in your pictures that it looks like the glass just snaps in? This is just guessing off of your pictures. _________________ Michael

hi Michael - your question is answered somewhere on this board. To save you a search, I'll answer it here again. Fold a towel so you have several layers. Place the towel on your workbench. Slam the mirror assembly down on the towel - mirror down- the glass part should pop right out. _________________ Jim

|
|
Folks
As I start to reassemble the K11 LT after painting, it occurred to me that even a minor knock on the LT mirrors would see them left behind on the tarmac.
My solution was to dip into my odds'n'sods box - 4 screw nipples (The emergency cable repair type) and two 6" lengths of inner bowden cable.
I drilled a 3mm hole through fairing and mirror base. To fit, push the cable into mirror from the outside, fit the nipple (This avoids having to remove the glass from the housing).
Pull the nipple inside the mirror body, and thread the other end through the fairing body.
You should drill 25mm up from the centreline of the lower two fixings, to avoid the internal reinforcer.
It is easy to remove for cleaning, and requires minimal butchery of the panelwork. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

For my mirror leases I used steel fishing leaders and installed snap swivels to make them easy to remove when needed.

Me too. Now I can't remember if I came up with that idea on my own or read it somewhere... _________________ tlp

I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere, I'm not a fisherman so I had to buy leader specifically for making tethers. _________________ Mike Currin

Wow! A girl on a FAST bike!
I enjoyed your post and the pics tell a 1000 words. I'm a gearhead but I have a lot to learn about the K since I had a R100/7 for 29 years before that. That machine was simple.
Thanks for sharing all the info.
Now I want auxillary lites + relay and updated headlite bulbs.

Steve found the problem was a loose connection between the wire from the bike and the the wire from the temp gage at the molded plastic connector.

Ok, time to address my shortened side stand.
A little history first. In '06 I had the suspension lowered because I'm short and had dropped the bike several times at a stand-still.
The forks were custom shortened and a lower slung Works shock was put on the rear. The problem that caused was the center stand and side stand were now to tall.
So Steve shortened both. Here's a series of pics that should tell the story.
Here's the shortened center stand and orginal side stand.
Well there was much gnashing of teeth but we solved all the fouling with the exhaust, and fouling with each other and both stands worked.

Fast forward. On my ride to Alaska in '06, the fork seals blew and before I could get to Anchorage where the freshly rebuilt ones were being shipped, they were utterly destroyed. The new ones were of course OEM ie. taller.
By the time I got home, the Works had given up the ghost
So I upgraded to Olins
In time we put an orginal centerstand back on because with the suspension returned to near orginal height, and the modified one was now useless.
That left me with a side stand too short and between me running out of enough leg to lift it if it were leaned way over and all the princess parking I had to find, it was time to address it
I visited my parents this weekend and my Dad helped me with this project. First, I went to a metal shop and picked up a round drop for free.
First things first, before attaching a welding machine to one's bike. Thanks Steve.
Yeah, I see the hole, but I didn't want to bother my Dad with it. I'll get it filled in soon.
I want to dress it up a bit first, then I'll paint it.
It was a HUGE inprovement on my ride home. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
