Has anyone found any handguards that fit the bars on a K1100LT? I could not find anything in a search through my BMW literature; and I don't want to use some sort of Hippo hands unless forced to. My K1100LT has a sidecar attached, and I'm riding it in this Winter weather, and want to continue doing that. The heated grips are not enough, I need WIND protection, and not just Winter Gloves. On my Airheads, I could install GS handguards...haven't found anything similar, for the K11LT. Am I going to have to modify some sort of snowmobile handguard, or??

R1100 handguards will fit since that bike has the same clutch and throttle assemblies but you'll give up a little turning radius. I borrowed a set from the dealer and broug hthem home to try on my bikes. Nowhere near enough room on the RS and the LT they were still a little big inside the fairing so I took them back. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for that information!! I had suspected that they might fit. I had been hoping that handguards specifically for the K1100LT were made by BMW...but never found them in USA catalogs.
I might just order the R1100 ones and see what is what. I doubt the turning radius shrink on a stock bike would affect me...not sure....perhaps you could supply a tad more information on just where the handguards contacted the fairing? On my bike, the front end is a EZS leading link type, is NOT the stock telescopic front fork. My bars come nowhere's near the fairing of the LT when at full left or right lock.
I appreciate the information...you are the FIRST to give me anything at all that has any real facts. _________________ Bob Fleischer, AKA Snowbum

71602340208 is the part number for R1100GS handguards kit. It's about $35 for the kit which inclues all mounting hardware, instructions, etc...
I was actually more interested in putting them on my RS as I rode it down to SoCal in November and knew I was going to get wet/cold. I kind of knew they woldn't fit in that fairing but my FLD is only a few miles away so it was worth a shot.
I held them up briefly to the LT but as you can see (generic pciture I pulled form the Internet) they're pretty darn big which is good for protection but I thought they'd block the mirrors too much. As I recall, they're also maybe 2" out in front of the brake lever which would hit the fairing as well and not allow full lock. To max out the turning radius, it would prbably be advisable to rotate the bars up or down to find the sweet spot.

Following up on the prior posts:
I run a K1100LT with an EML sidecar. I drive it all year-round; which, in my area, means I drive in wet, snowy, COLD weather at times.
I wanted handguards (sometimes called brush guards), something like the more or less hard plastic types I installed on my old Airhead sidecar rig.
BMW offers a handguard kit, designed to work with the stalk type mirrors on the R1100GS, but since the bar controls, etc., are so similar to the K1100LT, I decided to try this kit as the basis for the installation, and it was not very difficult to slightly modify it to fit pretty well.
The parts cost me about $35.00 or so.
I started with the BMW handguards kit #71-60-2-340-208.
Here's what I did with the kit, which comes with instructions for the R-GS:
I reamed (one could drill 1/2") the mirror stalk holes on the two adapters in the kit. I enlarged them slightly so as to fit standard M8 allen head shoulder bolts. You will need to purchase or make up two of these bolts. One should be 40 mm long, preferably with an area of no threads of maybe 9 or 10 mm (full length thread bolt is OK however). This bolt is for the left side. The other bolt needed is 16 or 18 mm long, for the right (throttle) side. You will need two M8 standard nuts, or Nyloc type locking nuts, and possibly one or two M8 waverly locking washers (not needed if using locking nuts.
The RIGHT side (throttle) has a THREADED area for the mirror. Note that it is REVERSE threaded. I drilled it out for the M8 bolt.
I did not use the spacer, nor the longer M8 reverse thread bolt that came with the kit. _________________ Bob Fleischer, AKA Snowbum

OK....I will take some digitals of the handguard installation, and post them, to my website. in the next couple of days. I put the information on the handguards, slightly edited, on the website tonight.

OK...too snowy (no top on sidecar today) to go outside for photos, but took some half-assed-OK ones indoors. Finished the article, and uploaded it to my Server. Has part numbers, modifications, installation, notes. ...and 4 photos....

Thanks!
Since those photos were taken I have done a number of things to the rig, both the tug and the chair. I recently finished making a VERY high quality top for the chair....almost ready to install it.
This year I need to modify the LT front shock innards. I don't like how the LL handles a very specific type of bump.
Already done stuff to the sidecar shock/suspension/brakes. We are thinking of taking a month++ trip on it this year, besides our usual camping trips, etc.
I ride my other bike, an airhead, in the Summer, when I need some 2-wheel time.
I made a 80 pixel avatar for my postings, couldn't get it properly uploaded, or, the Administrators for the LIST need to approve it.
It won't be animated at this time. I'll work on that in a day or so. I'm busy this afternoon making a part on my lathe.
I did the final editing and uploading on the handguard article a couple of minutes ago. I decided it needed an area of caveats, etc. _________________ Bob Fleischer, AKA Snowbum
