I have picked up a 'new' 1996 K11RS SE. It only has 11,500 miles on it. It's been serviced at Mortons BMW in Richmond. I called to check on all the service records and talked to the service department. Everything was done except the splines on this bike have never been lubed because it never reached that mileage point i presume. Regardless the mechanic indicated the he would not worry about it until it started leaking from the tranny or it was time to replace the clutch! He basically indicated to take the bike out and run it! I guess he's going off his experience in taking them apart for service. I think he also indicated that these later year k's were not as sensitive to the spline lube phenom as the older models.

I thought i'd ask you guys what you think. I do my own service work and living in charleston sc am three hours away from any dealer. i'd rather not start taking apart a pristine condition bike if there's no need. the bike is like new and i doubt the original lube is all gone off it. i suppose the question would be has it degraded and would it be truely beneficial to perform this task.

Thanks,
Ned Beck

Pretty much as the mechanic said, only do the spline lube if the clutch starts to go or you have a leak and have to go in there and investigate anyway.

Splines are usually done around the 50-60k mark.

I wouldn't worry about it untl 40k-50k. (The BMW recommended service interval is 40k. (miles)

The other thing to be wary of is if the bike starts having trouble downshifting. Like from 4->3 or 3->2. This is a sign that your splines are getting dry and you should lube them SOON.
