Friends,
As I mentioned in another thread; I was thinking of having a Spring get together at Hungry Mother State Park.
http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/hun.shtml
I think we should have a date that is most convenient for Ted, Jim and Duckman. So I will let them get back to me after the New Year of a date that might work well for them if they could make it.
I am open to any locations, I just mentioned Hungry Mother, since I think its in Ted's neck of the woods and has great roads. The area and roads should be nice by mid May.
Wondering if people wanted to tent, lodge, or hotel it for the weekend? Wondering if anyone had any other locations or ideas? What do you think? _________________ Dom |

Another thought: http://www.bmwmoga.info/ The Georgia Mountain Rally? May 2nd through the 4th. I have never been to the rally before but maybe we could meet there? The town is Hiawassee GA right on the border of North Carolina and Georgia. Very close to the Dragon _________________ Dom |

Hungry Mother sounds good.
It even has a cool name and would be in decent distance for me.
Sure it would be 10hrs and 430 miles on I-81, but hey. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

GMA is a GREAT rally, I won an Aerostich there in 1997 (that later proved to be an exceptional win!) That said, the area around Hungry Mother is simply phenomenal an I would LEAP at a chance to run down there for the weekend _________________

I would love to do Hungry Mother. Thats a great area of VA. My wife and I are expecting our second child around May 1, so shortly after that could be a no go. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Great,
Hungry Mother it is
Some odds and ends I have been thinking of:
Memorial Day weekend, would be nice that people would likely have the time off, however, the traffic and police would more likely be in force.
So maybe the week prior to Memorial Day? Any thoughts?
Squids: A few past posts have mentioned them especially in the areas we are thinking of riding. After 20 years of riding, I have learned never judge a book by its cover. I have seen kids run old Gixsers that hold perfect lines and old guys that are all over the place. And vice versa, I have seen old guys on Goldwings handing it to middle aged guys on the latest sport bikes. In addition, a lot of the young guys can't afford Jap bikes anymore, the bikes are very high priced now for new and used. So the few that are riding, are better then in years past, or their smaller numbers aren't making as big of an impact IMHO. Although, I still see a few on the roads that shouldn't be there or on the news, but its no where near what it used to be even 10 years ago.
The Dragon: I agree with Duck, its nice, but not any more so then a lot of the other areas in a 100 mile radius of there. Plus many of the other roads have less traffic and less police patrols.
Cabins: I ll have to look into the cabins again to refresh my memory. If I remember correctly; they had 5 bedrooms with 2 single beds per room. A total of 3 showers inside each cabin and 2 toliets and 3 sinks. A small kitchen in each and 2 sofas and a coffee table. The beds come with pillows, blankets and sheets, so there is not a need to bring sleeping gear.
Hotels are close, roughly 5 miles for those that want to go that route.
I have a buddy that still rides a 1984 R100RT that knows the area very well. I ll have him send me a list of his favorite roads and attractions. I can then come up with routes and maps for people to put in their tankbags for rides, if people want any suggestions.
I am already looking forwards to it _________________ Dom |

Count me in. An off holiday weekend is always nice, less traffic, crowds at facilities, hotels, etc..
Maybe a Thursday through Saturday/Sunday depending on time needed.
Cabins sound fun and could be very social for a large group. I do camp, but would prefer a regular bed and hot water if possible for a MC trip.
How many VA K's would there be? Come on guys! _________________ Steve

I've made it to the Minneapolis show six or seven of the last eight years. Looking forward to it again this coming February.
Any others from the Minnesota area planning to attend? _________________ tlp

Glad everyone seems happy with Hungry Mother
The 3rd week in May is the 17th and 18th.
Should we go the tradional route of Friday and Saturday night?
Or Saturday and Sunday night, so we can have the roads to ourselves on Sunday?
Some odds and ends:
I happened to notice a rally to the west around 270 miles with the same date. http://bmwmcon.org/rally.html
I stopped here once, very good food, cheap prices and homemade ice cream, about 65 miles South
http://www.goblueridgecard.com/discount-services/Brushy-Mountain-Smokehouse-and-Creamery.html
Cheesey tourist thing to do, but kinda neat
http://www.linvillecaverns.com/main.html
Nice ride to the top The walking bridge is fairly adventureous on a windy day
http://www.grandfather.com/
The cabins have free fire wood and clean beds.
Anything you guys want to do or other dates let me know?
I guess I ll need a head count soon to book the place, should be a good time. _________________ Dom |

OK - count me in - it's only about 5 hours away (barring a five hour back up on 81). Maybe I should look at back roads at least part of the way. _________________ Jim
