It ocurred to me the other day that an easy way to speed up an RS some would be to swap in an LT final drive (32:11 - a 2.91 gear ratio) for the stock 31:11.(2.82)

Sure, you'll take a mileage hit and the top speed will go down but performance is never free.

Since I've got a spare 32:11 in the basement, I think I might give this a go in the spring. My RS will be pushing 40k by then and in need of a spline lube.

I have always wanted to gear the K-bike the other way, taller.

I've had a Luftmeister gearset in my bike for probably 15 years now. It is a +7% taller 1st through 4th and 11% taller in 5th. That gears it like an R-bike in 5th and makes for 4500 rpm at 80 mph. It's probably got 250,000 miles on them and since I am changing the transmission, those gears may not be up for another rebuild.

I have obtained a cruiser rear drive with a 2.54 ratio that will pretty much equal what I have now. Just need to do everything, but I'm healing from a surgery right now and will have to put it off for a month or so.

Especially since I've put the 1100 engine in my bike, I've felt that it pulls this taller gearing great. Yeah, if I need more I can always downshift. Like one of our members has in his signature "still searching for sixth gear" Even with over 300K on this bike, and even with the tall gears.

2.82 to 2.91 is not much change (3%). I doubt you will feel any big difference. Now if you went to a K75 3.20 gearset (12%), you'd have a drag bike, or hill climber.

Here's a test to see if you'd like a taller gear- Get going slowly in 2nd. Accelerate and tell yourself it's 1st. Go through your gears, when you are ready to shift into 5th, you can't because you will already be in 5th. If you feel like you needed that 5th, you need taller gears. I've done this with the Lufty gears and I still would like that extra 5th.

Hi, All,
Check your rear end ratios. Yes, the parts fiche says there is (was) a 32/11 (2.91) ratio for the K1100LT. Maybe there was and, Drake, if that's what you have, fine. But both my K1100LT's, a '95 and a '96, both Special Editions, had 33/12 (2.75) final drive ratios.

i am thinking of changing up to a 2.65(34/13)04'LT rear drive. I spend a lot of time in 3rd in the twisties, going to 2.65 would let me go to 2nd and have the taller 5th for the highway.

I dont know why they geared the K's so low. My R11S is so tall ist hard to drive in traffic, but at 80 im spinning 4000rpm.

Is the 04 LT rear end a bolt on or will gears need to be exchanged from LT to 1100RS housing?

It'll bolt right up. The housings, swing arm, etc.... are the same.

Exept from the spring strut mounts. On the 1200 LT the spring strut is mounted on the rear wheel fork, so there are no threads back on the reardrive for the pin bolt as used on the kK11.
But threads can maybe be made..

FYI: I was referring to the K1100LT final drive, not K1200LT. I misread his question and didn't see the "04." My bad.
