My K110RS has been smelling of hot oil lately but as it is an ill treated hack bike that I have been abusing for the last 3 years (pretty much trouble free) I have ignored the problem.
But this morning I saw a big puddle of milk shake underneath the bike which has been running down the centre stand mounting, this is obviously a mix of oil and water which has probably come from a breather pipe so I have checked the water level and it is slightly down but there is no oil in the water and no water in the oil.
After my short time checking this I would probably say its head gasket so has anyone out there had head gasket trouble? or could it be something else and what sort of job is it to do? the bike has done 70000 miles and I am sure they dont usually blow at such a small mileage

From what you are saying, you may have a leak from the transmission if it is running down the centerstand.
Water and oil leaks can show up ahead of that. Oil out of the bellhousing drain means a rear output shaft seal usually. The water/oil pump will leak out of a drain in the bottom center front of the oilpan.

Yes the milky oil is in the transmission! when I drained the gearbox it was pure cream and the leak is coming from the clutch adjuster and running down onto the exhaust the question now is why?

It seems to me as though you are getting water into the tranny somehow.
There is a vent on the top of the transmission case that may have fallen off. It is near the starter, just inboard if I remember correctly. It looks like a black plastic "knob". That is about all I can think of. You at least need to flush the oil out with something to get as much of the milk shake out as possible. Get a new boot for the clutch adjuster and refill with synthetic gear lube. Then see what happens. I hope there is no permanent damage. If there is, it will be bearings more than anything else.

Thanks for your help I have run a gallon of parrafin through it twice and refilled it with gl5 ep80/90 and I will run it for a while and see how it goes.
I had thought it was head gasket which would have meant I would have broke it (parted it out) and found another one but it looks like its going to live to fight another day, I have also just realised its 3 years to the day when I bought it.
I cant believe with the miles it does and the fact that I only change the oil every now and then that it just keeps going, I havent washed it now for at least 2 years!
The saying is: ride em like you stole em and use and abuse em
they just keep coming back for more!!!!!!!

Hi, Scott,
Parrafin, in the Queen's English, is kerosene. He ran some through the gearbox to flush out the water which might have still been in the gearbox. I hope the bearings will not go bad from their experience with water.

My first car was a 1960 3.8 litre Jaguar MkII saloon car. I also (later) had a Triumph TR6. I also had 2 Nortons and a Dunstall-Norton, plus lived in Ireland for a year and a half. I'm familiar with some of the Queen's English, e.g., petrol, sparking plugs, gudgeon pins, wings, bonnets, boots, facia plates, windscreens, silencers, spanners, etc., etc. Some of it makes sense; some doesn't. I guess that's why it's said we're separated by a common language.

Hi, All,
The company I was working for sent me to Ireland the summer of '77, and I stayed there until December '78. Once, not having been there for too long, I saw some of the (female) factory workers walking toward the downtown area of Galway. I rolled down the window and asked if they would like a ride. None accepted and they looked at me strangely. Only later was I told that I should have asked them if they wanted a LIFT, and I had actually asked them if they wanted to go to bed!
