I was thinking the same thing about the bags, very sharp, and of course the rest of the bike. What's the story?

Sorry for the delay in posting again.

Found the bike at a local dealer. Been looking at BMWs and Ducatis throughout the New England area. This '94 has a bunch of miles on it (70k) and has very few minor blemishes in the paint and needs a few areas slightly freshened up but it looks like a 9 out of 10 and runs FAST.

Will post more pictures when I get the chance- actually once I stop it long enough for some pictures. LOVE IT!!!

John

"What year, miles and how much?" '94, 70,000mi, $4000 (actually- priceless)

Long story.........

OK- Cathy and I take the '94 K1100RS for a second "test" ride from the dealer's location. Feels great, sign the papers and load the bike into our truck. Get it home. Next day (a Sunday back in October) she and I go on a 2 lane back road get-aquainted with the bike ride. 45 minutes in it starts with some surging/cutting out/dead engine (oh nutz- what did I buy?) routine. Runs strong at 70+mph but longer and slower climbs has is acting up again.
Call the dealer- they pick it up (at that point I had the bike for 5 days) and they proceed to keep it for close to 2 weeks and still have not fixed the problem. After a bit of upset on my part, they decide to refund my $$.

Fast forward...... On the BMW MOA site I find a '93 K1100RS with 33k on the clock for the same price. Much better condition + less than half the miles AND Chris Harris at Affordable Beemer Services has done service on it- I picked it up from him. This guy knows BMWs.

So- stock seat, black bags BUT this K1100 seems to be in much better shape.

BUT- since we brought it home- nothing but snow. It is now sitting in the heated garage. Think that we may have to load it into the truck and drive 2-3 hours south to ride it.

We can't wait until Spring!!!!

John and Cathy,
Great looking bike, congratulations. Now for the shameless plug. Looks like it could use a Staintiune exhaust or maybe a rear top case since you ride 2 up or how about a Throttlemeister. All of those items are available in the For Sale section. Enjoy your ride.

Carl,
Thanks. Actually right after the dealer took back the '94, a top box that I had found on-line arrived. Great! At that point I had a box but no bike to put under it!

As you can see by the poor picture from our garage (it's heated) I put the box on the tail section. Cathy has one request about any bike we ride- there has to be something behind her. She doesn't necessarily lean against it all the time, but having a backrest or a box with a backrest pad allows her to relax more.

The returned '94 did have a Staintune exhaust which we found too loud. That was the one thing about it that we did not like, and if I had kept it I was going to look for a stock system to replace it- guess my ears are getting older along with the rest of me.
Not knowing too much about the Staintune systems, perhaps they come in different versions- some louder than others. But other than the discoloration of the stock system that is on our '93, it seems OK. We will have to spend some miles on it next Spring.

We are planning a couple of longer trips next Summer- Canadian Maritimes and to the Midwest for an extended family reunion for Cathy.

For those trips I might be keeping my eyes open for the larger top box that came on the LT's- I understand that it would fit our bike.

Thanks for the input.

Hi, John,
Yes, the LT top box will fit onto the RS, but you will need the LT mounts for it. The mounting bracket is different from that of the smaller topbox which you have. They come up, from time to time, on e-bay as well as at the used parts vendors. The case usually has the rear speaker/backrest mounted onto it and, because of it, the top has a couple of holes drilled into it for the mounting. Without a radio, I'd look for one which never had the speaker/backrest mounted or, if that proves difficult, you can fill the holes and repaint the lid. My late wife was never comfortable using the backrest as such; yours may think otherwise. YMMV!
Ride Safe,
