Seats & Saddles
by Ted Verrill

Russell Day-Long

The Russell has the reputation as being the most comfortable seat made for a BMW. Unfortunately the reputation also is for the ugliest seat made for a BMW motorcycle. Some liken it to a tractor seat. If you want any indication of how people like them however, try to find a used one for sale (good luck!) Each is truly custom made (unlike other seat manufacturers who claim custom seat though they are sold off the shelf?!?) and the purchaser must supply Russell with photos of the rider(s) on the bike along with info like inseam, height & weight.
Installation: Easy
Need: The K seat is wonderful for some, torture for others. If comfort is king, look no further.
Cost: $300 to $600
Return Policy: Full refund if not satisfied and an attempt to adjust is not successful.

Corbin Saddles

Corbin saddles are certainly up there for the best looking on a BMW. Corbin will even sew a swatch of the BMW "Motorrad" colors for no extra charge. Corbin seats are however, loved by some and disliked by others. Used seats can often be found for sale. Recently there have been many reports of poor customer service and declining quality, though there have been an equal amount of posts praising them.
Installation: Easy
Need: The K seat is wonderful for some, torture for others.
Cost: $280 and up.
Return Policy: Corbin seats can NOT be returned, all sales are apparently final.

Mayer Seats

Bill Mayer, the originator of the highly lauded Bill Mayer Seat, passed away recently. Both of his sons, Rick and Rocky (see below), are now making seats for motorcycles.

Photos 1, 2 & 3 (Mayer photos courtesy of Pat Roddy)

Rick Mayer Seats The Mayer family is both new and old on the BMW motorcycle seat scene. Rick's Dad was the original designer of the Russell seat. Rick has continued the fine tradition of custom seat making after the passing of his father and has continued with an enormously popular custom seat - much like the Russell, but with no internal springs. Those who have reported liking the seat have far outnumbered those who do not.
Buyer ships own pan out before "manufacture date" agreed on by both parties. Seat is then built and shipped on that day. Total turn around time, both ways, is usually 7 days (buyer pays shipping charges.) Mayer will apparently make any adjustments on the seat after it is manufactured, free of charge.
Installation: Easy
Need: The stock K seat is wonderful for some, torture for others.
Cost: $235 and up.
Return Policy: NYA
Product Review: Randy Glass has put together a page showing the manufacturing process of a Rick Mayer Custom Seat
