Thanks for the reply Duck, the gauge has been accurate for the last 19 years, so I have no doubt that it is correct,e.g the fan comes on when its into the RED,
Yes the bike is worse at low speed and better at high, but still runs hot though at higher speed, the radiator place told me the radiator you cannot pull apart so there is a possibility the radiator could be the issue. (even though they said it was OK)
I have a spare bike 1984 K100, will that radiator fit in the 1100 as the last process of elimination?

The reading from the temp gauge really doesn't matter. The sensor it uses only outputs to the gauge. On one of my K1100s I plan to replace the temp gauge with an oil pressure gauge when my garage heats up a little more next month. I might actually look at that.

I'd suspect the REAL temp sensor at the output in the front of the head might be the issue. For starters I would test the resistance between Motronic pins 7 & 14 at room temperature when the engine is cool and see if that's working. (See the table I posted on the previous page.) Next you could pull it out and test the resistance in boiling water to see if it gives the correct resistance for 100C.

Is the temp warning light in the cluster coming on? That's triggered by the Motronic.

No the temp light has only ever come on when I had a thermo fan fail, I'm going to replace the radiator from the k100 and put it in the 1100, according to Max's BMW parts fiche, they are the same part numbers.
I'll report back with an update?

So I removed the new thermostat and took the bike for a ride, the temp gauge showed what would have been a normal temp, before this overheating issue started, sitting in about 1/4 between the blue and the middle of the gauge, although riding slower the gauge did creep up, I did have the radiator looked at by a radiator specialist and advised me that it was OK, I'm starting to think otherwise, that maybe the radiator is the culprit, although I can still get 3 litres of coolant/water 50/50 mix into the radiator, would that negate a blockage?

Not necessarily, as the water will fill from both sides of a blockage, it just can't flow thru one.
Regarding water flow, it will flow thru the path of least resistance, so if you have the thermostat out, the path of least resistance will be thru the bypass hose, not the radiator.

Update on my post from yesterday, I rode the bike to work this morning, 16 Km's about 20 minutes 12 degrees Celsius , there was some traffic and slow riding in the last few minutes and it caused the Thermo fan to come on when the gauge went into the red?????

Apologies for not being here so long.
OK so I've now replaced the radiator with one from a K100RT heaps thicker, replaced radiator cap, all hoses and forked out heaps for a new Thermostat, bike rides for 5 minutes and it's hot.

Need to ask one thing I've left out, I replaced the oil pump/water seal, just wondering if there is by any chance the return coolant may not be getting through quick enough to make it circulate through the Radiator System?????

To me it seams like a blockage or restriction of some sort, but I may have got the reinstall of the new water pump wrong?????

Thoughts please.

Last and final update, after more dismantling and frustration, after all this time the issue was The New Thermostat, I eliminated it as the problem because it was new genuine BMW, now there's a lesson to be learned

Well it wasn't to be the final post, the overheating has continued, it wasn't the new Thermostat.
Flying Duck the Temp Sensor measured up OK.
I have now ridden the bike in 6 degrees C (which is the equivalent of your 40 F) the gauge near the red for a consistent 150 klm and after stopping at a red light in town for only a minute, the thermo fan comes on.
I'm now leaning towards a blown head gasket, although there is no water in the oil or oil in the water, the bike is loosing coolant, but not through the overflow bottle, I have placed a pressure tester on the radiator and it looses 10 psi overnight and the coolant level drops, but there is no sign of any coolant leaking at any of the hose joints.
For those that have replaced a Head Gasket in the past, can the injector rail system come off in one go undoing the 5 mm hex bolts that hold them to the head? Any other advise on removal would be appreciated.

Are you getting white smoke in the exhaust? (Typical symptom of blown head gasket as coolant burns.)

Pulling the injectors is easy-peasy. Just undo the fuel lines to the fuel rail and then the two bolts that hold the fuel rail to the head.

You'll need a HIGH QUALITY Torx bit to undo the bolts that hold the head to the block. Those things require A LOT of torque to undo. An impact wrench would probably be useful.

When I had my last K1100 I had the same problem when in southern Europe crossing the Swiss alps with temperatures around 90F. The motor was so hot it was boiling the fuel and the pump was screeching.

I limped back home and investigated and found the Thermostat had failed. BMW 'stats fail shut so that the only circulating water to get around is through the tiny bleed hole in the thermostat body itself. A new one cured the problem immediately.

It's an easy fix, you don't even have to fully drain down the cooling system so the problems with bleeding the air afterwards are reduced as well

I'd check the thermostat first as Grunter suggests. It's rare for the head gasket to go and a MAJOR project to replace.

I have already replaced the thermostat twice, new from BMW, I'm really not looking forward to doing this, but it's my last option, while it's apart i'll replace the timing chain.
I have a lot of tools, but the torx T50 has pulled me up need to get one that will fit the 1/2 inch driver. The intakes to the throttle body look like one time crimp clamps, so i'll need to do something there also. There isn't much guidance as far as timing marks/TDC go compared to a Japanese built bike???

I had a K75 first and it took a while to get used to the heat of the 1100.
The first day I got it I took it to Dublin and got stuck in city traffic Rolling Eyes

In an busy traffic it will just about go into the red before the fan cuts in
all time.

Don't know if that helps.
