Ive been thinking about doing this but with just two 1157 recepticals instead of four.
you're input would be helpful. think this way won't have to worrie about the flasher speed. and double my tail lights and brake lights.
hear's the link..

I did something like that to mine. The run-N-Lites people sell a kit called the "K-Tail-2" that does exactly that. I don't remember what it costs but it makes a huge difference in the back end.

On the LT I hooked them up to a flasher that flashes them a few times and then remains solid. I think the flasher thing cost me about $15 on FleaBay.
Like so: (My camera doesn't pick up LED light too well - they are red, not orange, in real life.)

I have the K-tail-2 and I think it's great! On my last K I did the two 1157 mod and that was good too. I like the k-t-2 set-up better though....and it's a bunch easier. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

Another option would be to go with a filament 1157 (that would keep the bulb monioter happy) in one socket and then you could do something LEDish in the other. Like a flashy or spinny LED. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'd try calling Run-n-lites. They may not make it anymore.

Any more details on the flasher, Duck? I'd like to track one down. _________________

I work in an Operation Room as at tech. I do have a mecanical background. I have repaired everything on my bike myself..not afraid to do anything aslong as it comes with instructions. is this easy or hard?? if i get this can I ask one of you how to make it work..I don't have funds to waste. but i do like the Idea of a flashing break light.
Thanks in advance endo _________________ In the words of the stones

I know LEDs are the future but I particularly like the OEM nature of the K-TAIL-2 ENHANCEMENT from Run-N-Lites so have ordered it from EPM Performance imports. I was impressed they can still offer it so looking forward to receiving it in a few weeks.
I might add a couple of the Eagle Eye LEDs as dedicated fog lights if I feel the need in the future. _________________ 1994 K1100LT |

Well the wiring kit turned up, seems to be well made:
Had a look at the plastic after removing it and surprised to see it seems to have been burnt by heat and slight melting:

Is this normal as it must affect the bulb's brightness. _________________ 1994 K1100LT |

Yes. It's normal for the plastic above and around the tail light to darken like that. The bulb is always on and generating heat. It has no significant impact on the tail light brightness. The inside of the tail light compartment is not reflective like the brake light compartment is.
I don't know what it does in the brake light but if you put the Run-n-Lites dual filament bulbs in the turn signals then over time the turn signal lenses will slightly melt/warp. I've seen this on a couple of med-high mileage Ks with turn signal Run-n-Lites that I've purchased.
I have a pretty bright red LED bulb that I use for the tail light. I purchased several different LEDs to experiment with because I needed to experiment to find one that was bright but did not generate too much heat. I found that of the four or five different LED bullbs s that I tried this one is pretty bright but does not generate a lot of heat. It has 12 3030 LEDs. Since the tail light compartment is not reflective it really doesn't matter how much light goes out to the sides so having the LEDs all pointed straight back yields good results.
Technically it's not legal since it doesn't shine white light on the license plate but that's not an issue to me and we don't have vehicle inspections where I live. (If we did have inspections then I'd just swap in the old bulb for the inspection. )

Very helpful as usual! I’ll try and get a replacement plastic unit from a low mileage K as the damage just annoys me now I’ve seen it. I’ll probably take your advice and look at a white LED and as it runs in series with the new Run-n-lites bulb I should be fine with bulb check light I guess! _________________ 1994 K1100LT |

Unless you buy new or from a bike with VERY few miles you're not going to find a tail light lens assembly that isn't brown above the tail light. (How brown that is is one of the things I inspect when looking at a K to verify the mileage.)
If you put a white LED behind a red lens then it will appear pink.
After my post yesterday I found a 14cm white LED bar to illuminate the license plate with white light and ordered some of these to mount to the bottom of the tail light:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/203087207917?var=503400384015
When they show up in a few weeks I'll test it out and post my results here. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I've just bought a rear unit off eBay and the photo didn't look too bad so fingers crossed but not everyone rides with their lights on in the UK so we'll see!
The original bulb is white so I don't see why the light will appear pink but again we'll see!
Interesting idea with the LED bar but it could be over complicating things! _________________ 1994 K1100LT |
