Can someone do a couple of quick checks for me involving the rear shock on K1100LT. No dismantling is involved. My bike has an almost new aftermarket Ohlins shock absorber and very good it is too. It was fitted by by the previous owner who has since died! The problem is, I think it may be a little bit too long for the LT.
When the bike is on the centre stand there is barely 1/4 inch between the bottom of the back tyre and the level surface of my garage floor. On my previous LT's there has been up to 1 inch clearance.

So if someone could be kind enough to measure the actual length of a standard BMW shock, between the centre of the top fixing bolt and the centre of the bottom fixing stud.

Then with the bike on the stand, measure the gap between the bottom of the rear tyre and a level road surface.

Stock shock length center eye to eye is 15.25"

I can't measure tire gap, the bike is on the lift.
Realistically, there are a few variations that will affect the tire gap.
Tire size mounted
Center stand mounting(with or without spacers)
Tire size of the front tire.

I replaced my OEM rear shocker in May last year. Given cost of BMW (Showa) replacement I opted for a YSS MZ366-385TRL-01-88 shocker.

This model I fitted has the following features as taken from YSS info
YSS MZ366-TRL
This shock is a nitrogen gas shock. Adjustable on spring preload, rebound and length if "L"is marked in the partnumber.

Explanation of part number:
M = Mono shocks
Z = Topline Nitrogen emulsion gas shock
-
36 = 36MM piston
6 = 16MM shaft
-
T = Threaded spring preload adjustment
R = Rebound adjustment
L = Length adjustment ( length +5mm/-5mm)

Given I'm always 2up (wife) I've opted to extend the shocker by the max 5mm and added 1 full turn of preload to the spring which gives me ample travel etc especially on the roads here in Tunisia. With the max extension I've got about 1/2-3/4 of an inch ground clearance when on main stand.
385 in the model number refers to the length of the unit

That's the overarching reason why I bought it. I paid £200 including delivery from a company in Italy called XParts.
They are located near Rimini so we used it as an excuse for "another" trip round Italy.
They delivered it to the hotel we were staying in. Fitting was a breeze, took less time than it took to boil a kettle for a cuppa.
Even "she who shall be obeyed" likes it, to the point she says it makes the ride more comfortable. I have o agree because the handling has improved when two up and fully loaded.

Going back to the ORIGINAL question...! Yes the Ohlins shock on my bike is the same length as the one quoted by Scott Anderson. Both the front and rear tyres are almost new with full depth of tread so this 'may' account for the lack of clearance.
