I have just finished refitting the final drive to my K1100 after replacing the input seal and it is back on the bike. One point that I don't understand is refitting the final drive strut (the part that runs from the back of the gearbox to the arm under the final drive)

The BMW workshop ROM states to put a weight of around 180lbs over the rear wheel before tightening the bolt to 42nm toque. Why is this? What purpose does it serve?

The only way I can think of doing this, is to sit on the passenger seat myself to provide the weight, but working on the bike on my own, I find it impossible to do this and apply the necessary torque at the same time. Has anyone found another way around this that doesn't require the abilities and skill of a contortionist?

I can't say as I have done that on any of my K's or my R.
I put the arm on, let the weight of the bike settle on it, and torque it.
Over 100K miles on 3 different paralever BMW's and haven't had one fail yet.

I would think it's to centre the stress on the rubber bushing in the strut

I have done all the setting up, but have not been out on the bike since the work was done The day after I finished, snow arrived and although there was not a lot of it (about a 2 inches, the roads have remained treacherous with my car loosing the front end grip turning of at a junction. If that had happened with the LT it would have been bad!

So the bike has stayed indoors hooked up to an Optimate charger
