Hello everyone!

First time poster here. I got a 1995 BMW K1100 LT that I’ve been taking down the cafe racer path. I’ve come across a peculiar subject that got me curious. I took out the clunky original instrument cluster and (for the time being) installed basically a Chinese led dash that does the job. The Chinese dash has 5 (with possibility of a 6th) gear wire connectors. But I have noticed the bike only has three along with a neutral. How do these three wires work? Is there some sort of logic like one wire means one gear while two active wires means another? I’d love any feedback as to how this works and if anyone managed around it. Otherwise, I’ll just listen and feel the RPMs to shift.

Look at the link below to see how it works. There's table half way down the page that shows which wires are grounded for each gear.

If you don't care about the gear but just want to be able to detect neutral for starting then you can build one of these pretty easily:

I ended up designing my own logic gate system to fix the issue. However, the logic LCs I’ll be using are rated for 3.3 to 5 volts. I tried measuring the voltage on some of the gear position wires but got nothing. Does anyone know what voltage gets sent through the wires? Really just want to know if it’s 12 volts so I will know if I need a regulator.

0 volts.

The gear position PCB in the cluster senses open/closed circuits to ground.
