On my bike, first ride of the day the ABS doesn't seem to kick in. The warning lights stay on until i stop at a light or sign, turn the bike completely off, turn the key again, start and get rolling. As soon as I get rolling the light finally extinguishes. Do I need to change the sensor on the rear wheel or ?? _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Are the two warning lights flashing - together or alternately.
If the latter then, it's a sign of low voltage to the ABS caused by the first start up. Usually cleared by riding a mile or so, then trying a restart as per your description.

Yes that is normally the way it happens.
With my last K1100 this started to take place and I just lived with it. Then after a lay off for 2 weeks I went back to the bike and the battery was almost lifeless. I replaced the battery and all was OK again. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Time for a new battery... or else get the current battery charged up. _________________ Jim

The battery is fully charged, and it has been doing it since before I bought this battery. I doubt it is a battery issue. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Sounds like you may be having the beginnings of a starter issue.
When the battery is 'cold' at 1st start, the voltage could be dropping just enough to make the ABS unhappy. Then later as the battery is warm from being freshly recharged(and the heat of the bike), the voltage on restart stays just above the minimum threshold.
What is the AH rating of your battery. _________________ Ride safe.

The battery is 21AH and the German smart charger says it is completely healthy. The voltage is always low when you start -- the alternator and charging don't kick in until you rev to about 1400, which I always do right after starting. And this happens even when the charger has been connected and keeping the battery topped off all night. I hear what you are saying but I have my doubts this is the explanation for what I am seeing. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Do you have LEDs in the instrument cluster? _________________ Jim

Because if you have one swapped out the charge light filament bulb for an LED version, the excitation current (to kick start the charging for the alternator) will be insufficient.
Having said that, on a lot of K bikes, if the bike is revved to 3-4k rpm it will self excite and start charging. It should then work as normal until you switch of the engine. The next time you start the same problem arises.

Well, for what it's worth, every now and then when I start my K, cold in the morning, if the bike doesn't fire off right away and I have to hit the starter a couple of times, I get the alternating ABS lights.
Yet after work when the bike has sat in the sun all day, I don't recall ever having the alternating ABS lights at startup.
I've got a 20ah gel battery that was new in '19.
YMMV.
Maybe it's a sign of the times... everything seems to be being made cheaper with lower quality standards than years ago.... I'd imagine that batteries are no different. _________________ Ride safe.

I've been running LEDs in the clusters in all of my Ks for over a decade. Never caused any ABS issues.
Yeah, if you don't rev it enough (2,00-2,500) and the charge LED stays on you're running off of the battery but as soon as you give it enough revs to get the bike moving the LED goes out and all is good.
