|
|
After much digging I recently purchased a pair H4 LED headlight bulbs. I then did a headlight bulb "shootout" against my garage door as documented here:
http://www.kbikeparts.com/classickbikes.com/ckb.tech/0.ckb.tech.files/hltest/hltest.htm
That was just against a garage door 15 feet away so not a real world test of how they work on the road. I installed one in one of my K75Ss and took it for a ride down the coast and back to the Bay Area where I got the chance to do some actual night riding with the H4 LED. Given how crappy the headlight assembly is on K75S bikes I really wasn't expecting much but I ended up being very impressed with how well it performs. Two thumbs up! (And only $40 for two of them.)
I haven't done any night riding with one in a K1100 headlight assembly yet but given how well it did in the K75S I'm very confident that it will do well in the K1100 headlight too.
Here's the ones I originally purchased:

Those are currently unavailable but I found these that look like the same H4 but sold under a different brand:

Thanks Duck, against the garage door do they have the low beam "cut" that keeps you from blinding oncoming traffic? A friend put LEDs on his GS and they seem to blind traffic. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Yes, they seem to have done a good job with the cutoff on these H4s. It works just as it should with right side of the low beam tilting up a bit to illuminate roadside signage.
No oncoming traffic flashed me once I had it aimed correctly. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Some other bikes of the era use the same headlight as the K75S. This H4 works well in that headlight so it would work well in these bikes too:
