I was wondering if in cars a radiator cowling aides cooling then would the same do so for our 1100's? _________________ I walked out and looked at the Roundel. K1100lt 1992 plus K1100ltps Police special 1994. |

The K1100 already has a cowling around the radiator. You have to remove it to get to the radiator. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

The newer folks on this forum have thought about (or even done) the fan switch mod, right? _________________ John & Cathy

I already bought a new SPAL fan and the adapter to mount it but have not yet done the swap. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Finally bit the bullet and requested a new password, had an update with windows 10 and they left me with nothing in history to keep passwords in. I was thinking of a split shroud behind the radiator with two radiators from a 1200 that would duct air through to the side ports but not over the engine. A new radiator piece would need to be made to replace the existing one so the radiators could be slanted or angled a bit. _________________ I walked out and looked at the Roundel. I put a three core in my K1100RS (which has been ridden in hotter SoCal climates a lot.) It made no difference. Think about it, whether you use a three core or two core radiator it still needs to dissipate the same amount of heat.
The heat issue on K bikes is not caused by the radiator but by the fact that there's nowhere for the heat to go since the area behind the radiator is pretty closed up. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Cooling is not about the size or configuration of the radiator, it's about how much heat you take away from the engine. The P-51 Mustang engine cooling system is an excellent example of the principles of cooling an engine. Worked perfectly. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

How long do you think a P-51 engine will last idling in Los Angeles traffic for hours?
K bike engine cooling works quite well as evidenced by the fact that, as long as you are moving, the fan does not come on. As I stated above the issue is that the engine compartment is pretty closed up so once the heat has left the radiator there's nowhere for it to go. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I was agreeing with you. But since you asked, P-51's don't have problems with cooling on the ground either. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

A few years ago I brought a K1100LT back to life after it had been sitting for ten years. While I was revamping it I forgot to check fan operation. It took about 6,000 miles of riding for me to discover that the fan was seized. I got stuck in 95 degree weather in Tillamook, OR in some super slow stop-n-go construction traffic and the temperature idiot light came on.
I just turned it off when stopped and then restarted it when I had to move until I made it through that traffic. Put another 1,800 miles on it without issue. When I got home I installed a SPAL fan.
Another story: Was helping a friend do some maintenance on his K1100, he'd stashed a couple of extra credit cards in the relay box in case of emergency. From the heat down there when we pulled them out they were both melted, really warped and completely useless. Evidence that it gets pretty darned hot under the tank. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, cannot find a sub for my 93 1100 stat, would like to get a 170/175 * F.
I did this on my '96 and it seemed to help. ( maybe just a little)
The O'Reilly number 7214-170 is no good anymore.
Anybody running a different make than BMW? ($75.00!!) _________________ 96 K1100 LT--gone

You might check with Auto-Zone. I got one from there a few years ago but didn't like the fit, so I didn't install it, and by the time I tried to fit it I had tossed the receipt so I couldn't return it. _________________ Ride safe.

That part number shows up at AutoZone...

Don't know if it's the right one or not.

I think the main problem would be where to place the duct to get the hot air away. The K1100 lump is just that and is tight in the frame. I used to dread having to change the air filter because it was always a fight to get a new one back in. Also the shape of the lower fairing may not have been the best design to allow the flow of air to the radiator.
On the subject of the cooling of 2nd world war piston engine aircraft, the Rolls Royce Merlin when fitted to the Spitfire and Hurricane had a limited time of running before it overheated if take off was not almost immediate. It did not appear to affect the heavy bombers such as the Lancaster because they had a larger radiator.
I used to own one of the early UK Built Triumph Trophy 1200's and they were notorious for having a radiator too small for the engine capacity. Even at 60-70 mph the cooling fan would often cut in to give it a bit of a boost to keep the temperature down. I often wondered had they just fitted the same radiator to the 1200 as they did to the 900 triple, because essentially they were the same bike with a smaller engine with one cylinder less. _________________ 1997 K1100LT
