|
|
So today,, I was very fortunate to have remove the driveshaft on my 1993 K1100 RS with about 106,000 kms on it and found the front universal joint is bad,, I can't believe I am sitting here typing. One end is completely dry and there are no bearings in it.I shutter to think of what could have happened,, Can the u-joint be replaced ? I haven't found where to get one if it can be .If I can't get this fixed without having to buy a new driveshaft I will junk the bike. Thanks for any help you can give me. I have heard of others having the joints replaced.
The yokes get machined a bit to accept retaining rings for the replacement joints.
I can't say as I know where it can be done unfortunately. _________________ Ride safe.

Sugarhill had a shaft fail, he did a post here about a rebuild service. You might search and read what he thought about it. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

The guy who worked on John's drive shaft will not work on K bike driveshafts - only R bike. I spoke with him - he doesn't even remember working on John's. _________________ Jim

Usually it's the rear U-joint that fails but it's not unheard of for the front one to fail. (When I tour on a K1100 I always throw a rear drive shaft half into the tail cowl so that I can replace it on the road and not get stranded.)
If you buy a used drive shaft make sure that there's no "lumpiness" in the U-joint when it's rotated. It's also a good idea to check for U-joint lumpiness when doing a spline lube. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Question for ya,, Aprox how much do you think this bike is worth as a parts bike or restoration project bike,, I'm just trying to weigh my options here,, ABS stopped working front brake master cylinder needs rebuilt (and the driveshaft )... I could deliver to someone close enough to the Boarder,, probably wouldn't make any money but we could get a mini vacation out of it. $1000? _________________ 1993 K1100RS,Black |
