Hello all,,
I dont have a product, but rather am looking for a product which may be a figment of my imagination.,,, BUT somewhere Ive read or "heard" about a new MIT developed nano liquid called either "never wet" or "ever dry" that can be used to 100% waterproof any fabric item.... WHY ??
Well I have a tank bag from Whitehorse made by Corteco.... that is just right for either my K11 or my G650.... good design, well made, however the problem is that whenever it rains the moisture goes right through to wet every item therein. I thought to find this new "product" and treat the bag and never worry about the rain again.
Anybody got any trusted ideas re "waterproofing" tank bags other than a plastic cover ??
best regards all......// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Hey Ernie, there is always that "AS SEEN ON TV" spray stuff that turns a screen door into a boat bottom.....
But seriously, I've not personally used many "waterproofing" products that actually worked or that didn't have to be re-applied on a regular basis.
There are plenty on the market for you shoes, boots, and outside gear.
Cabella's and Bass Pro would be a couple of retailers I'd check at, but I'm not too sure there is one near you.
Google is your friend. _________________ Ride safe.

Gwen wrote about something she either tried or was thinking about trying. I can't remember the name of the product - but I remember looking it up online. I think it was in the thread about getting ready for her Insanity ride.
IIRC, Gwen was thinking about using it on all her clothing, but wasn't sure what it would do to her. _________________ Jim

I use ScotchGuard on jackets when they start to lose their waterproofiness.

Porsche sells a spray can for use on their canvas convertible tops. It's clear, but gives the black tops kind os a shine. It beads water and the instructions tell you to spray several layers on seams. You can find it on eBay for a reasonable price. It may just be scotch guard, I'm not sure but it sure works! _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Hi Guys.....
Hey.... THANKS for the input and the experience with these products.... the more I think about it,, the guy with the 'boat bottom' stuff sounds like it'd do the trick, but NOT if I ever anted to open the bag again,,!
The "stuff" I saw, i believe was highlighted during a segment from NOVA about the materials development at the MIT lab in Cambridge. Im sure it was an outgrowth of nanochemistry, and IF I find it, and IF it will do what they say, and IF its reasonable to afford.... I will get a sample and use it.... , then deliberately leave my tail bag out in a cloud burst. Result will be shared right here on good 'ol K11OG.
Scotchguard is great stuff also, I used to use regularly it on my tent and tent-fly even though daytime UV seemed to degrade it fairly rapidly... have not thought of it for a long time, though I dont know why.
Thanks again guys.... just thinking about Scott and a Flex-Seal windscreen for the K.. ((...just thinking ! ))

Almost bought some the other day - will order soon. I want to try it on boots and shoes. Actually, I'd like to try it on a jacket, but I get the feeling the stuff is not skin friendly... might react with all the micro plastics I've ingested? _________________ Jim

Hi Jim et al.....
I found the Rust-o-leum Never Wet product on Amazon as you said. Got the fabric version.... its only one step: ie spay it on.! I did my Tail Bag and my fabric riding vest which advertises to the cops that I am DEAF....plus all the other shit I'm into, and though I havent been in a "rain storm" yet and neither has the bike, when under its cover it still gets wet..... Thus far it seems to be working on the Tail Bag whose contents have remained dry since being treated. ( prior to Never Wet that was not the case ) ... It did not change the color of anything, and leaves a dry surface. I suspect however that it will not be a "forever product" since the Nano-chemical contained in the spray that actually is the hydrophobic work-horse of the product is most likely oxidizable and/or UV degradeable... Thats my take so far...!

Hi Guys...
OK... back to the Never Wet test.... Its now the end of August and back in early July I said " it hasnt been wet yet".... boy do I regret having said that. Here in northern New England RAIN has been nearly a constant event every day since... and as regards the Tail Bag wetness problem, I set the bag out in the rain ( since I had no desire to ride and get wet myself ) .... the rain just beaded off and despite leaving the bag in the rain for most of an afternoon, the contents remained dry.... of course if it were on the bike, and we were underway somewhere in the rain, I would have placed the cover on the bag to keep it dry. .... BUT sometimes its not possible as we all know.
So after all this I think the nano-product Never Wet made for fabric really does perform as advertised ! Thanks Jim for getting me off on the right track !!

Ernie - I bought a couple different nano water repellent products - tried them both on my worn out Cycle Shell - they work!
Next - shoes and boots. _________________ Jim
