My bike (K1100lt 98') has been tucked away since August last year and i have just got her out today. Been on an optimate the whole time and started almost instantly. ABS does not seem to be setting itself, the lights are flashing left side then right, and the noise it usually makes when i start moving does not occur. I know that if the battery is a bit iffy problems with the ABS can happen but the battery is good. i have tried to reset by stopping, turning off the ignition and restarting but still to no avail. When i put the bike away in August everything was working fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. _________________ K1100 lt 97' |

Read thru this a few times.

Then just ride the bike. Sometimes the abs ghosts will just give up trying to torment you and all will start working again....... _________________ Ride safe.

When to much voltage drop is the problem, the warning lamps flash together when you turn on the ignition
and start to flash alternately when you push the starter button.
If they start to flash alternately before that, it's something else that is the problem...and you must readout the fault codes.
If a voltage drop is the problem, try to pull the clutch and switch off the ignition a couple of seconds while moving at normal speed,
and restart the engine in gear without using the starter.

Check your wheel sensor cable's, both that they are fully plugged in on the loom and that the connections are clean, also check the cable's are good, my rear one was worn through (mice?) and broken, a quick soldered joint sorted it. _________________ Southern Hampshire, England.

This.
My bike was doing the same thing but it was usually when it was cold outside. If the weather was warm, there were no issues but let the temps drop a little and I'd have to ride about 30 yards, stop, turn off the bike, restart and then it would reset. I *think* I've remedied the problem with a new battery. I haven't had a chance to check as I haven't had the bike out of the garage since installing the new battery.
My battery stays on a tender whenever it's in the garage and the bike would start fine but I think the slight drop in voltage when it was starting in the cold weather was enough to cause the ABS issue. _________________ 1994 K1100RS

Thanks for the help and advice given here. I have been and had a bit of a look today, basically shorted out pin 2 of the three pin connector with the blue cap as suggested, then turned on ignition and held down abs switch. this resulted in the alternate flashing stopping and only the right hand abs light steady on. rode the bike up and down but the light stayed on. stood at idle for a couple of minutes and then the alternate flashing started again. i pushed the abs switch and again (without shorting out the test plug) the alternate flashing stopped and just the right hand light came steady on. What i can't get my head around is that it was all working just fine when i put the bike away, yet now it is faulty. I think that rather than spend loads of time swapping bits over( i have a whole exact same spare bike) i will take the advice of scott anderson and just ride it for a while and see if it "self heals". To be honest i'm not bothered if the abs doesn't work but those flashing lights are really annoying. _________________ K1100 lt 97' |

A couple strips of vinyl electrical tape fixes those #$!@#@$$#! ABS lights.
Just apply them to the glass over the lights.

One thing I found with resetting the ABS is that you do need a really good earth connection. I have screwed a piece of wire to the frame for just such a purpose and it just stays coiled up on the bike for whenever I need it. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

IMNSHO don't just reset the ABS, without reading the fault code. As Inge says.
Scott is right too. Use the Tech Sticky's. Not much to change, only two sensors, which usually are stuck fast.
Faults 1-4 are sensor related, 5 battery.
If you have an analogue meter, the ABS sensors should be 137 ohms & the same meter may be used to count the fault pulses. If you have a digital meter, then an LED setup will be required to read them.
Taping over the lamps is ideal if one has a long journey as the ABS button only stops the flashing for 5 Minutes. Knowing I had a less than perfect K11 would niggle me until the fault was cured.
My bet is a crappy electrical connection. _________________ Regards Tim,

Code 3 Front wheel sensor. As you know. So- if it ain't the sensor, it must be the wiring, or more likely, corroded connections (usually under the tank) & back to the ABS unit. With your multimeter check the sensor (137 Ohms ) then trace the wires back to the ABS plug. Bet there's nothing there.
Had a quick look, somewhere I have the ABS electrical pin-out. Will post when I find it. _________________ Regards Tim,

Thanks Tim. Yes, traced wires back to the loom and then back to the abs unit. Plugged in a spare sensor, theres no sign of corrosion. Like i said earlier, when i put the bike away in August, everything was working normally. It was stored in a dry, heated workshop. The lights start to flash alternately immediately the ignition is switched on. I'm sure that the fault is not due to low battery voltage. I reckon i'm just going to have to put up with it and see if it eventually resets. _________________ K1100 lt 97' |

Try here http://k-technik.pytalhost.com/pdf/ABS2web.pdf
Should find the sensor across pins 13 & 25 of the ABS plug.
I trust you did a reset after swapping the sensor.
Also, if there's more than one fault, then you should re-read the code & reset until all stored faults are removed. If there is still a fault then it will be stored again at switch on.
The lights always flash alternately if a fault is stored, Both on constant until the rolling reset @ 5 MPH is completed.
We WILL beat this.
BTW I shall be @ Tattenham Corner Epsom next weekend. _________________ Regards Tim,

Hi Tim, thanks again. i have tried all permutations of resetting, pulling fuse 5(which i believe removes stored fault codes) etc etc. still the same problem. Still get 3 flashes from the led test. The indicators started to work again all on their own so maybe the abs will as well !! looks like insulating tape over the flashing lights is the way forward. _________________ K1100 lt 97' |

Sorry No, pulling fuse 5 will NOT erase the fault code from the memory.
Try this :- Resetting ABS2 on early bike, (essentially the same on yours)
Locate the diagnostic connector under the seat. Remove it from the blanking plug.
Insert one end of 20 cm wire into the middle socket of this connector.
Ground the other end firmly to a metal bolt in the area (and keep grounded).
Turn on ignition. You should see the lights flash alternately.
Hold ABS button down for about 8 seconds. The bottom ABS light will stay on, and the top one off.
Release the ABS button. If you have successfully reset the ABS, both ABS lights will come on. If you have failed to count to 8, or your ground is not good, the top ABS light will stay off.
Turn off ignition, remove wire. _________________ Regards Tim,

Managed to find time to get out with my bike and have another look at this abs problem. I get a reading of 128 ohms from the plug where the sensor connects to the control unit. I get the same reading when i connect the spare front sensor. If i disconnect the plug from the abs control unit and switch the ignition on, i get no flashing lights at the clocks, but if i then connect the abs main connector, the lights start flashing alternately again. As i have mentioned earlier, the bike was fine when i stored it away last year and this problem has appeared during this time. I have tried resetting using the middle connector of the diagnostic plug to ground. As Tim said earlier, it is niggling to have an unexplained fault but it seems that running the bike with the abs unit disconnected is my only option. I would really like to fix this so any further suggestions would be gratefully accepted. _________________ K1100 lt 97' |
