I was Ft Worth this week on business and had some free time, so I stopped by the local BMW dealership. I got to talking to the service manager and he informed me they did not work on bikes more than 10 yrs old. I've never heard of a dealer not servicing all their bikes. Is this common? Imagine breaking down on the road and having the bike hauled to a dealer only to have him tell you it's to old! _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

Any of their "expert" mechanics older than 20?
What a great business move- turning away work.
Find a REAL dealer, or a good indy wrench. _________________ John & Cathy

I think's it's more to do with how long that they have had their mechanics. Younger ones don't know the old bikes and most dealers won't spend money to train them(if it's even still available) on older bikes that aren't in the shop enough to be a cost effective expense.
The older mechanics that do know the older bikes either left because of corporate bs, or just plain retired to wrench on their own. _________________ Ride safe.

Hear Hear, I too, have had the haughty "that's too old for us to carry spares".
Two options, find a good independant or get your own hands dirty & know that the job's been done properly.
I'm sure if you opt for the latter, everyone on here will support you. AFAIK theres no (K11) problem that hasn't been solved on here eventually. _________________ Regards Tim,

I suspect BMW themselves push their favoured dealers this way. The main ones here, Morgan and Wackers (locally known as Morgan and Wankers) are the same ie nothing over 10 years so there are a number of thriving BMW repair places making good money out of it as they don't have the corporate overheads draining their pockets. _________________ K1100RS '97

Here's a twist on this thread....
A couple hours south of us there is a very good independent mechanic who will not work on BMWs newer than 2004. _________________ John & Cathy

My guess would be that he can't afford or cant acquire(bmw won't sell) the required tools/computers/software to be able to work on the newer ones. _________________ Ride safe.

Yes, Scott- that is an important part.
But also he actually goes on, sometimes at great length, about BMW quality dropping after '04.
Got a few minutes? http://www.affordablebeemerservices.com/bmwthoughts/
He is a good source for K bike repairs of all kinds. _________________ John & Cathy

I hear you there John, but in reality today what mfgr hasn't dropped quality in the last decade. It's sad but true. _________________ Ride safe.

The problem with BMW is that they now sell copies of japanese bike, more expensive and less reliable. BMW bikes could last for ever and thus could be resold at a decent price, now who's going to buy those unreliable, no DIY repairs, used bikes, dealers? _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

John,
Chris ( Affordable Beemers) was one of the independents I talked with about my clutch and transmission problem that was supposedly repaired 5,000 miles before I bought the bike. After looking at the pics he felt the dealer just replaced the friction plate due to stripped splines, but left a damaged input shaft in the transmission but charged for the replacement of it. Only to have the same problem happen again. He had nothing good to say about the dealers.
You would think they would be required to service their own make as a requirement for getting the dealer franchise. I understand not working on the really old antique bikes, but a '95? _________________ 1995 K1100 LT
