|
|
I like to post about good products and experiences I've had related to motorcycling and here's one of them:
After misplacing my stainless steel fastener kit ordered from Desmopart about five years ago(long story), I finally found it and am even more excited than the day I first received it.
Desmoparts.com offers a really cool set of stainless steel fasteners (screws, bolts etc) for a variety of motorcycles including our K bikes.
The kit to do an LT is $49.00 and has about 150 pieces. The bits are packaged in about six bags with instructions on where they go on the bike.
Pretty well every accessable external part is in there.
The owner of the company, Chris, personally strips a sample bike down to determine exactly the parts needed and puts together a kit with all of the fasteners in stainless steel.
It will likely take me more than a few hours to swap them all out but the result is a cooler looking, non-corroding, functional setup for a fairly small investment. AND there's a whole bunch of spare parts that I will have taken off the bike.
Why don't you check out his website. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
www.desmoparts.com . I believe it's in Texas.
I have no commercial interest in Chris's company. Never met the man.
Just a great idea and great product.

Used them for some parts on my departed K1100RS. Good quality. _________________ John & Cathy

I met Chris - he used my '97 LT to make the kit up. He usually keeps a bike for a few days to figure out what to put in the kit.
Chris worked on my bike the better part of a day - with a few interruptions. I think he later had to add a few bits to complete the kit.
Chris is a very cool guy! _________________ Jim

Now I remember the connection, Jim.
I was the guy who kindof put together your meeting so Chris could make a 'template' for LTs.
What did you think of the kit?

I have the kit on my RS, both the regular kit and the belly pan set (highly recommended) and I have been pleased with it. I got about 90% of the bolts and screws on there, couldn't figure out a few and had a few odds and ends left over.
Well worth the money and time spent learning more about your bike by taking parts of it off! _________________ Steve

Don - I never got the kit. Chris replaced all the fasteners on the bike he could see, some that were hard to see - and some behind the covers and under the seat - and gave me an RS kit - some of which I have used and some I haven't.
We didn't replace any of the stressed attachments - like for the rotors. _________________ Jim

John - sure enough! It's got the trailer hitch, VA inspection sticker (although I can't make out the year), a Remus exhaust and my gps mount.
Nice looking bike! (and it's famous!) _________________ Jim

The only thing I will add to the topic is that with the new fasteners you need allen wrenches to remove some of the fasteners that were previously just a philips screw driver.
The knee panels, the inside dash panel, front brake master cyl cover, and the gas cap are the 4 that I can think of off hand that need the allen head for the new screws.
I have had issues with the 4 screws at the outside edge of the dash panel are just barely long enough to screw in with the stainless tapered washers. They only get in by maybe 1 or 2 threads at the most.
Im not to sure but that I didn't swap the original bmw plastic washers so I had more screw to thread in. _________________ Ride safe.

The K is still on the DesmoParts site - looking good! It was much younger then...
Progressive is making noises about totaling it... Time to part out the boat anchor (thank you, Morton's BMW - that was a waste of $10,000.00+) - get what I need and sell the rest.
Took a look at the Desmo website - in case there was a kit for an R100RT. One of the other R kits will probably cover most of it.

I once bought some stuff from Desmo. Some of the fasteners were obviously used. For what they charge I don't think that should be the case.
I now get my SS stuff from a local supplier, Tacoma Screw Products. Including tax, I pay about $20 for what Desmo would charge about $60 + shipping.
I do have to come up with my own inventory of what I need but that's not a big deal to me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

And the guys who work there are awesome. I'll come in with a 30 line list of what SS I need, 2 of this, 3 of that, etc... and it takes them a lot of time to dig it all out. But they are always incredibly polite and friendly even though I'm not one of their usual high volume contractors. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Maybe you could put kits together and sell them for $30.00... That way you'd at least be buying in quantity... _________________ Jim

I just got the kit from Desmo off eBay. Very impressed, clearly labeled and bagged with a sheet explaining which bag has which parts, and when you need to reuse the cup washers and such. Price was $44.95 plus $8 for shipping. I'm in the planning stage to remove all of the body work for paint, will post some pictures when I get a chance. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Not a comment about stainless, but my KLT is exactly the same colour scheme as yours, only the 2nd I have seen. One thing I think that BMW managed to get right! _________________ 1997 K1100LT

One thing Desmo doesn't do (as far as I know) is rotor bolts and peg plate bolts so you'd need to sort that out for yourself.
I do understand why from a potential liability perpsective though. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Last time I talked with Chris, he was getting all his stainless from Italy. He wasn't comfortable using the grade of stainless he was getting for rotors and peg plates. Harder stainless is available from UK vendors. _________________ Jim
