|
|
Hello K Bike friends -- This week the fuel pump on the '95 K1100RS with 70k miles quit. It was 48 F degrees, raining and we were in rural Czech Republic (that's another story).
Fortunately, a spare fuel pump was on board. Three hours later the repair was complete. Now to the issue:
This is the third fuel pump in 10K miles. Replacement pumps were decent quality (all-metal internals, Euro products), fuel filters were changed, hoses in good condition. When fuel gets to half tank, or in warm weather, the fuel pump whines loudly. When pumps have failed, it was accompanied by burned-out 15 amp fuse, so current overloaded.
What root cause may explain multiple, premature pump failure and overloaded current? Otherwise, the K1100 runs strong, starts reliably. Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you get fuel pumps 2 & 3 from the same source? If so, stop using that source.
Just because it comes from Europe doesn't mean that it's good. Think Triumph TR7 or anything Fiat. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

It's a challenge to keep the flexible screen sock affixed when maneuvering the fuel pump into its socket. It's possible it becomes detached, allowing sediment the enter the pump and leading to seizure. Any trick to keeping the sock attached or confirming same when changing the pump?
Here's the pump that most recently failed. I selected it believing it was more robust that ones with plastic internal components.

That's a weird pre-sock with the attachment in the middle. The factory one has it at the end. I don't see how the middle attachment one would ever work well in a K tank. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Update: A few days after the pump "failure" and replacement in a rural barn, I made it to a repair shop. We connected it to 12 VDC and it spewed fuel. It was good after all.
So only the 15-amp fuse blew yet we ended up replacing the otherwise-working pump with an on-board spare. Still, the mystery remains why the fuse failed. K-bike Guru, Andreas E in Germany, suggests changing all the related tank internals (hoses, pump, filter plus injectors) since they are 30-years old). A good idea every few decades.
We'll ride the bike to Heidelberg soon. Fingers crossed. Adventure ahead.
