I bought a running wreck of a R1100TSS following the demise of my K75 and set about restoring it back to the land of the living. The 1st thing I did was transplant the fuel filter from inside the tank to the outside so when the time came to replace it I did not have to take the tank off and open it up to change the filter. This is common modification especially with the R1100/1150RT bikes.

Now I have quite large hands and replacing the filter on my newly acquired K1100lt will be a real struggle because getting my hand into the tank to unscrew the clips is virtually impossible. Has anyone else tried this and if so where did they locate the filter on the bike?

Like you I've done this on my R...
However I've not done it on my K.
There is a drawback to placing the filter external to the tank on the K, and that is exposing it to the heat of the engine/radiator air flow.(don't have this on the R).

Left side, in-line between the tank discharge and the fuel rail inlet would be the most logical placement.
There's not a lot of room there if you still have the air-flow "baffle" media.
However, on that note, you can run fuel line to wherever you want to locate filter and back to the rail.

Makes for an interesting conversation......

Food for thought, on the subject of hot fuel and hot tank, there are options to help mitigate the heat issue.

1: "Johnny Blanket" treatment of the area under the fuel tank.
2: install a remote fuel "radiator/cooler" to help reduce the temperature of the fuel.

The 2nd option also allows for installation of an external filter....

Are you trying to get a hand IN the tank with a screwdriver? I use a long screwdriver and a bit driver with an extension.

No I know the foibles of getting the filter out and back in again but with hands that take extra large size gloves, it is a struggle and usually end up taking the skin off one or more knuckles in the process.
That itself is not a serious problem, but I since my last 'K' bike, due to a medical problem, my doctor has put me on a medication which slows down the clotting procedure so. if I cut myself, even slightly it can get a bit messy. Plus 'She who must be obeyed' doesn't like blood dripping all over the place

After seeing how easy it was to remotely locate the filter on my R1100RS I thought why not do the same on a K1100. That itself will be easier to do on a K. Plus I had intended to replace the internal tank hoses anyway, after 25 years they have had a good life..

Try Eliquis. Before he passed, my dad was on Warfarin or whatever and bruised or bled like crazy at the slightest bump/nick. I've been on Eliquis for several years now and when I nick a knuckle (as I do often when dinking with my bikes) it bleeds no more or less than before. Could be just dumb luck. YMMV.

Back to K bikes: When I got my hands on a 1986 turbo'd K75C back in 2014 I was quite dismayed to find that some previous owner/mechanic had seen fit to externalize both the fuel pump and filter. It took quite a bit of work but I was able to get it back "normal" with both inside of the tank. From what I understand, having the fuel pump submerged in fuel is what helps keep it cool and operating well.

Based upon that my suggestion would be for you just to externalize the filter and not the pump too.

No I had not considered moving the pump as well that would be a step too far.

I was looking at the fairing outside in front of the radiator and it should be possible to 'invent' some sort of bracket where the cool air will hit the filter first, but not obstruct the flow of air through the radiator.
I don't know at present.

Considering the filter where it is now on my R1100RS the engine gets very warm as well but so fat there have been no problems with the fuel boiling. It just needs thinking about. Thanks for your input anyway it is food for thought.

Having brought the 'new to me' KLT home yesterday, I have had a quick look where I could transplant the fuel filter and there seems to be more than enough room in front of the box where the radio is fitted and could be securely fastened to the outside of the radio box with a pair of good cable ties.

Your other option would be to teach SWMBO how to change the fuel filter. Laughing

Not an option! She would rather personally remove her teeth without anaesthetic whilst walking on a bed of nails.

She hates bikes and will not even sit on one.

Maybe this is a dumb comment, but I presume that you take off the filler cap first........

Does that comment warrant a reply?
