Hi im new here and have recently purcahsed a 1997 k1100lt with about 60k miles.
The rear shock is a werks with an external reservoir…unfortunately it is blown so Im looking for recommendations on whether these would typically be worth rebuilding vs replacing with something new. If rebuilding, Id appreciate any suggestions for shops in FL, preferably close to orlando if anyone here has used someone….
Thanks!!

Yes. Worth rebuilding.

Works Performance is now WorX Shocks. (Owner died and they closed but due to demand a daughter restarted the business.)

I'd give them a call to see what the turnaround time is.

http://worxshocks.com/html/repair_and_services.html

You can ship it to them with a Priority Mail Medium Flat rate box for about $15.

If you want to get a new shock and not spend too much:

Yeah, I'm not sure how well Worx is being run. That's why I suggested calling them.

I did some Googling and found these guys, they sell some Works parts and offer rebuild services so they might be able to help.

You might want to call Ted Porter's Beemershop. I don't know if they do Works rebuilds but they're nice people and they might be able to refer you to someone who does.

I agree about Ted Porter and his Beemershop.

I have had them do rebuilds on 2 different shocks and they were very good to deal with.

Is there a chart or any resource for the rear spring rate? One of the rebuilders is asking what spring rate is recommended as he doesnt have that data for the k1100lt…

Don't know about the spring rate but looking through my files I found instructions for overhauling a Works shock.

http://bmwkbike.dx.am/tech/Works_Rebuild_.pdf

And please let us know if you do find someone to rebuild a Works shock.

Ted at beemershop doesnt. But evan at schmidtys does, he just needs to know the spring rate to set it up for me personally. I think the guy i bought the bike from was alot lighter than me. But the shock was already blown when i bought it, so im kind of guessing that based on our size differences, a new spring is likely needed…

I never purchased a Works shock new SO I COULD BE WRONG but I think Works just used one spring rate for a particular bike.

Back when they were in business I had Works rebuild three of four shocks for me and they never mentioned the spring rate, just used the spring that was on there. When I got them back none of those shocks seemed particularly stiff or soft to me.

That said, spring rate can make a difference. I had a Wilbers K75 shock rebuilt for me last year by Ted Porter and since I only weigh 160 they recommended swapping in a 35 N/mm spring vs. the 50 N/mm spring that was on there when I bought the bike.

I also bought a RAM/Realm shock once. Their default was to spring the shock for 2-up, fully loaded and the shock was way too stiff for me. I got them to sell me a spring that was better for solo, unloaded riding and it worked much better.

Interesting…..is there a way to check that the spring rate is sufficient without riding it? Like sitting on it and measuring the sag? The shock is very bouncy (thus the rebuild), but i dont know if that would matter to just test the spring??

You probably have already thought of this but are there any markings on the spring? Maybe if not a spring rate perhaps there's something Worx could help you decode.

I just looked again and i dont see anything on the spring. Though, evan did give me instructions on how to check to see if the spring is sufficient for me, and if it isnt, he said he can measure the spring rate and take a guess in the direction of improving…
