FIXT

"Was one of the best roads on the planet, the California coast"

Looks like some major pile driving is in order there... or maybe the road needs to be moved.

Just put a ramp on each side and make it REALLY interesting.

I've been riding the coast for decades. Part of CA1 is always sliding into The Pacific and CalTrans is always shoring up one part or another of it. They already have a contractor working on fixing this section.

This one isn't near as bad as the 2017 slide where it took well over a year to replace about a quarter of a mile of CA 1. This one should be fixed in months.

It's not a "really big" pothole unless you can build a park around it. Laughing

Washington state has a 1,200 square mile state park in honor of potholes:

This is a report of a rock fall in Austria in 2013. I had to change my touring plans that year but the Austrian engineers had the road open again withing a few months by completely upgrading the older road that had been bypassed when the new one was opened.

"On 14 May 2013 a massive rockfall occurred approximately 1,100 m south of the Felbertauern Tunnel, which destroyed the avalanche gallery „Schildalm“ of the P1 Felbertauernstraße over a length of 130 m. At an elevation of 1,770 m a.s.l. around 10,000 m3 of rock mass dislodged and cascaded down about 190 m of elevation onto the Gallery, which protected the three lane road below. The rock fall debris deposited in the rock fall track, on the road and down to the edge of the valley bottom some 70 m further below the road. As a part of the safety? and remedial measures instable rock masses of approximately 10,000 m3 at the head scarp were removed by blasting. To protect the remaining slopes, rockbolts, steel wire meshes, anchor beams and a rock fall protection barrier were installed. The access to the site was of particular challenge, therefore all tools, machinery and material had to be transported to site by helicopter."

10,000 Cubic Meters of granite rock on the move can cause a lot of damage!

The Swiss are also having problems with the risk of increased rock falls. They think with global warming the icy rock faces held in place by the intense cold at altitude is giving concern that this will also increase the risk of massive stone avalanches which can affect many of the mountian passes.

In 2013 there was a massive landslide of the side of a mountain above the road known as the Ferbert-tauernstrasse north of Lienz. In an unexpected collapse of the side of a granite face an estimated 10,000 cubic meters of granite collapsed and wiped out about 176 meters of recently upgraded road.

In the reconstruction they re-engineered the old road which had been bypassed to open the new road in a matter of weeks. In the reconstruction another 10.000cubic meters of granite had to be blasted with explosives to make it possible.

I rode over the new road the following year and even at night you could see the devastation this caused.

(I have just checked and the average weight of a cubic meter of Granite is about 2.5 metric tons so 10,000 - cubic meters is 250,000. That is one hell of a headache.)

Now the Swiss are becoming increasingly worried because of global warming will affect the higher mountains as the ice melts further up the rock faces, this is loosening rock which is in danger of collapsing.
