I just can't figure out how they only get a pathetic peak 91 HP out of 1,8 liters. An R1250GS puts out 134.
And the 91 is the claimed horsepower which means it's probably in the 70s at the rear wheel. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Likely the same way as on the K1100 -- derating with the Motronic box. I bet that German dude from whom I bought my chip already has one for that bike. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

But why?
At least on the K1100 there was a reason to detune - they were complying with a voluntary European 100 HP limit at the time. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Could be they decided for torque over top speed. Who knows. Hard to figure out German engineers these days. Maybe the ones who worked on this previously worked at VW. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

I agree, German engineers are something else. |

They designed the totally worthless K bike helmet lock. And even if you could use it your helmet would be resting on a hot exhaust. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I guess it depends on what helmet you own. I own a 4XL helmet for my giant gourd from Harley Davidson and have never had any problems using the helmet lock. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

The R18 is the "modern" version of BMW's other turd, the R1200cl.
But I guess there are some riders that put an awesome 1500 miles on their bike every year that might be buying the R18. _________________ John & Cathy

BMW has gone after the cruiser market several times. First was the R1200C.
That one kind of fizzled even though they showcased it in a James Bond flick. (Tomorrow Never Dies)
Next was the K1600B. That's actually done fairly well. Over on the K1600 site there's quite a few HD owners who are quite happy that they made the switch from the MoCo to the K16 bagger. When I told my HD neighbor that I picked up a K1600 he got all excited - until I explained that it wasn't a bagger model but a GT. I guess HD owners think there's only the B model and don't even know about the GT or GTL. LOL.
But I guess BMW is still trying to find a way to get HD guys to ride boxers. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

They will never get that right until they figure out how to install beer belly bags on the sides of the seats.

To be quite honest I cannot for the life of me see the point of this R18 monstrosity. I think the design engineers stuck a centre finger up at the accountants, I cannot see it being a world beater in the sales department unlike the GS series _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Most GS bikes never leave the pavement. (Starbucks' parking lots are paved.)
You're much better off with a K. (But I might be biased. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Gs1150/1200/1250 are very very popular all over Europe and some cover phenomenal mileages. That aside, even if they hardly were to get used, it is a sale contributing to BMW's coffers. They are also accredited with having the largest sales of any BMW machine at any time. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Yeah, SOME GS riders put some miles of them or take them off pavement. It's not identical but many GS owners are posers akin to HD pirates. They buy them for the image and, instead of loud pipes and more chrome, they deck them out with out with Touratech crap and Clearwater lights and then ride maybe a thousand or two miles a year.
At a corporate level, the sales do matter - both for BMW and HD. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

True, but HD sometimes shoots its foot clean off in the name of pursuing sales by doing things like producing single-seat bikes. These pander to wannabe "outlaws" with 50 cent Target shades, Amazon.com Chinese knockoff biker jackets and goatees that don't impress anyone but goats, and who have watched too many biker movies as teens.
The problem with that is that most of the customers of HD who might have come back to upgrade want to share their rides with someone, typically the old lady. They will not incur her wrath by buying a single-seat bike. Sale lost, and word gets around. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.
