Try reading this thread.

You don't need a large picture, but you do have to have it hosted elsewhere like photobucket, or smugmug, or somewhere similar.
Then once the picture is saved on the hosting site they will have a url link that you can then post here.

UPDATE
I found the problem. The forum software doesn't like URLs created by Picasa and certainly doesn't like filenames of JPEGs which have non-ASCII characters (such as space). Once I uploaded a JPEG to Photobucket and kept the name to strictly ASCII printable characters, the avatar worked.

Hope this helps others in the future.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm having great difficulty getting this board to recognize my avatar. I've created a JPEG of 80x52 and 8Kb in size. Jpeg quality is set to very low. I'm using Mac OS-X Preview to edit the image.

I hosted the image on Photobucket and copied the direct link. I paste that into the box provided on the Profile page but the board does not accept the link (silently rejects it and returns me to the Profile page)

I've tried avatars with sizes and resolutions similar to other members' avatar also without success. I've tried my Picasa album as well, thinking it might be a problem with Photobucket. All yield no success.

Here is the image I'm trying to use:

My preference would be to use this avatar instead, if possible:

Any hints to get this working?

If you're trying to use Picasa, it will work - you have to take out a bunch of code, though.

Use the search button above - try Picasa and Jim. The copy and paste lost the colors - too tired to fix it.

I have to delete 8 characters from the end of the line, and then take out a whole line of something in front of the location. When I copy the link, it looks like this: The part in red is what I have to remove manually. Even then, if there's a comment for the picture, it doesn't transfer. If anyone else uses a mac and Picasa, and you know a better way to do this, please let me know.

It's most likely photo bucket. They dumped the 3rd party host linking, unless you are paying for PB's premium membership at $300+ per year.
You will probably need a different photo host.
