They may be cheaper, but is it worth the risk???
K filters run immersed in hot oil, SO...... anything despite correct fitting, that is painted, is asking for a wrecked engine. Do a search on here, IIRC there is a list of less expensive equivalent spares. Not to mention "Chinese" copies of inferior quality. Mahle make the filter which BMW badge. _________________ Regards Tim,

Hilton,
You are north of me. Unless you are finding time for an extended summer trip, your riding season is 6-7 months and maybe 12,00 to 15,000 km, right?
I install a GOOD quality oil filter and new oil at the beginning of our riding season and just add fresh oil as needed- that will last me through the entire year.
So does saving $5 or even $10 per year on a cheaper filter make sense? When you look at the long term a few $$ more could give you DECADES of trouble free riding. IMHO, of course. _________________ John & Cathy

I was wondering how many miles would you run on a filter in the course of a year,,and do you by from the dealer?
I was given a K+N filter with the bike which I put in on my first oil change,, I was told this was a good filter by a friend of mine,,I figured if it's a good one I should be able to change the oil after 3-4000KM,, and change the filter every second oil change?????,,,,,
and if I put on 12-15,000 KM that would be a big year,,,and a 3 pack
of filters would do each year ,,they are reasonable at $36 ,, but a little more out of pocket up front( buying from the dealer) to save an engine is cheap insurance,, thanks for the input guys,, always appreciated ,,
Hilton
thanks for your input,,, |

I use Bosch filters in both my bikes.
I get a 6 pack kit and a package of crush washers/o-rings and they last me about 2yrs or so, depending on miles ridden.

I can get up to 20K miles per year between the 2 bikes, with most of the highway miles being on the '95 the last 4 years.
I start the season with fresh oil, and filter and change it about mid season after about 6-7K miles or so. I also run normal dino oil. _________________ Ride safe.

Jim (aka Saltcreek) has many engines of every type on his farm.
He sends the oil from his engines out for analysis, especially a rather expensive tractor.
From the results that he sees, most of us change our engine oil far too often.
Sometimes we are creatures of habit with old ideas on how frequently we should change oil.
PM him if you want to see/hear his actual results _________________ John & Cathy

I've been running the Bosch 3330's in my K1100 (about 8k between oil changes) for over 6 years and have never once seen any indication that the paint is affected by the oil immersion.
They cost about $4.50 at the local auto parts, so they fit my budget a lot better than the OEM filters.

I was thinking more about the cheap chinese copy filters that pervade our spares shops, rather than a good name like Bosch. That said, the genuine BMW & Mahle ones appear to be base metal & screen printed with makers name. _________________ Regards Tim,

Now that I definitely agree with, Tim.
I'd be as much afraid of the filter disintegrating as the paint peeling off.
Oil filters are definitely one place where being too cheap can cost you lots of money long term, although $15 for a BMW filter is out of my price range. _________________ '02 - GL1800

I cut open a fram a Bosch and BMW filters.
I got to say the BMW one had twice as much paper filter element in it and a
Plastic or nylon cage in the center to trap partials in.this thing had very small
Holes in it,cold oil barely went through it.take care of your engine.
15 or 20 dollar filters is a lot cheaper than another k1100 engine and shipping!just my two cents worth. _________________ 1995 k1100lt daily ride(22953)when I got it

Here is a picture of a Fram 6063 filter(left) and a BMW filter(right) that I opened a few years ago to see what the difference is. The BMW filter came out of the bike which is why it is dark.
