It's been in the low 40s and 30s lately in Seattle. Yesterday I flew down to SoCal to visit my dad and my LT. Ran some errands today on the bike. It's SO nice not to have to wear 18 layers of clothes and to be able to lanesplit. Yeehaw!
It was only in the high 60s today. Next week I'll have to break out the mesh jacket.
My bike's been sitting in my dad's garage down here for about six weeks. It's a bit dusty. I told him he's supposed to wipe it down every few days but he doesn't seem to agree. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Still getting some snow in the higher elevations down there it sounds like. Stay warm in the valleys. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Sitting in El Paso right now, having breakfast/lunch/dinner/supper. Left Long Beach @0536 this morning (yeah, there's another "new" bike in the bed of the P/U, and the rest is chock-a-block with KTM 640Adv parts). Wx forecast for southern Cali is for temps in the 30s by tomorrow and snow as low as 1000ft, not sticking, but above 1500-2000ft - stand by! I got up to and out of NE Cali in between snows and heard yesterday that the area E of Sac has, or is getting, a foot or two of new snow.
Hit the northern edge of ElLay Tuesday at ~4P, headed for LB - bad timing on my part but chalk that up to my having done ~2400 miles on something like 2 hours sleep - but I got to see the vaunted LA traffic up close and personal.
Dallas on a Friday afternoon is much more of a challenge - particularly if you're on the West side of town and there's a 'Boys game that weekend! In general, there's much less (useless) lane-jumping in Kali, and fewer (usually young wimmin in "cheap" cars) haulin' butt, slamming on the brakes, and shuffling between lanes w/o signalling.
I saw exactly one, yep, ONE, bike "splitting lanes." What the rest did was ride the double yellow lines separating the HOV lanes from the rest of us "not-interested-in-the-least-in-the-"GREEN"-arguments-because-until-a-viable-alternative-is-presented-and-implemented-it's-nothing-but-more-hot-air-from-rich-folks-who-have-nothing-better-to-do-than-make-life-difficult-for-us-po'-folk"-who-have-no-other-way-to-get-about-and-don't-have-household-staff-to-make-grocery-runs-and-such-while-they're-busy-at-their-keyboards-or-being-interviewed-by-some-muckraking-left-wang-wonk." Not a whole lot different than using the HOV lanes anywhere they exist and the "splitters" did not seem to be having nearly as much fun as I did when I first "discovered" the Dallas HOV lanes, way back when, and went buzzing through town, doing about 80 (with 6 lanes stopped to my right), ciggy hanging outta one side of my mouth and a beer tucked between my legs (and this was before I heard Robert Earl Keen's immortal ballad).
The thing about southern Cali is that there's no way around the mess and if you don't want to deal with it, well, you can wait until about midnight to go wherever you're going. And it'll still be 1837.43 miles from wherever you are.
I don't think anyone could pay me enough to live in that mess (but if anyone'd like to try, I'd entertain offers upward of $10K per month, after taxes, and all living expenses paid. Oh, yeah, I want some of those "domestics," too, but mine will have to be native English speakers. And I'd really prefer a Thai cook, while you're at it, with a Philippino/a in every couple of weeks to make lumpia and stuff - NO BALUTS ALLOWED!!!
So, for those of you in southern Kali, break out your long johns and see how much of the rest of the world lives.

Hi, Garfey,
So you're sitting in El Paso right now. I LIVE here, and you didn't even PM me to let me know you were going to be here. We have some great steak houses, but I won't take you to one because I didn't know you were coming! I hope you are having a good trip. _________________ Ride Safe,

HI, PM!
By the time you sent your chastisement, I was across the street regassify-ing the truck, or had already rolled East. (Already rolled - receipt time was 10:39P.) I think I lucked out 'cause regular was $2.989 and I think the next lowest I saw around ElP was $3.169, though it could have been higher than that. In fact, I think that was the lowest of the whole trip! (Nope - checked receipts right quick and I paid $2.959 at a Love's Truck Stop on I20, near Ft. Worth, Saturday night, westbound. BUT most places had raised prices $0.20 - $0.30 over the 6 days. They watch spot oil prices like hawks!
I was glad I just needed a pit stop at the Shell station at the Leemore/Hanford exit on "The 5." Regular was $4.199!!!
Left Long Beach @ 0536 yesterday and got home @ 1350 today. Made lot of pit stops, trying to stay awake, and these days it's one coffee in, two out.
My daughter lives West of Phoenix and I'm overdue for a visit. I'll try not to be in such a big rush next time through. I literally made the run on ~2.5 hrs notice.
I saved receipts from the whole trip and intend to post a list of what prices were, where. I took a pic of the sign at that Shell station! _________________ Shoganai made me do it! |

Hi, Garfey,
Yeah, I live here, but I work in the copper mine in Morenci, AZ. My work schedule is wierd. I get home 3 times per month when I have 3 days off (twice) and 7 days off (once). If I'm here and you're spending the night here, I'd gladly go to one of our better steakhouses. Hopefully the next time you come through, you'll know beforehand and let me know AND I'll be here and not in Morenci. I hope you had a good trip! _________________ Ride Safe,
