After telling Steve, you are the next to know.
I bought the domain name wrenchingwenches.com, .net and .org.
Holy SHIT!
A series of events and people popping out of nowhere to offer there services and help has given me the courage to attempt to start my own forum.
While traveling home from HL2 I met Jon aka NikonsAndVStroms who offered his services to build me a site if I ever wanted to build based on an idea I had.
Then this week somebody over on Kbikes posting as Ocelot offer to walk me thru buying a domain and how to set it up.
AND he said he would host it for free!
http://www.k-bikes.com/forums/showthread.php?p=170856#post170856
Ocelot aka Davis and I talked on the phone and I got a good feeling about him.
I joined this site >>> http://www.phpbb.com/community/search.php so I could learn more as well.
So, there ya have it.
There is also a HUGE amount of stuff that needs to take place and get done before it goes live, so it will be at least 6 months. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Now that you have a SNAP ON torque wrench you can show them wenches which way is up.
I would be happy to wrench with a wench any ol day
All the best with the project Shogs, I reckon you got plenty of experience and a great attitude. |

I'm sure there are dozens, hundreds of other women who share your love of wrenching Gwen. You going to do just bikes or branch out into other motorized pursuits?
Keep it up girl, I think you are really finding your niche'! _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

You really only need one. But then again I know how much women love to shop.
Good luck with your new forum. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thank you all for your support.
Wrenching other things...interesting thought.
I think I'll keep it focused on motorcycles to begin with and see where it goes. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Thanx Chris.
No, nothing is or should be ALL XX.
It's not healthy.
It's way too early for me to think about that aspect but it will come into play if the site become popular. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

It was brought to my attention that ‘wenches’ might be seen as a bit demeaning term to use.
The thought added that some women would see like that also.
I understand where the comment came from.
The word has less than a noble history. But its older meaning is that of a milk main, a woman of simple and poor means. http://www.audioenglish.net/dictionary/wench.htm
Yes, it has a dark side, but in America, it almost never used as a derogatory or demeaning term.
Among women, we often call each other wench and heifer, but only as a term of rough affection. Like men use bastard or some other sideways term that only close friends can get away with.
These are "slap on the butt" words, if you know what I'm saying.
I want to avoid looking too formal so as not to make some hardcore HD chicks or squids feel like they wouldn't be welcome.
I want it to sound fun and casual, like the way a garage does when beers come out and everyone sits around looking at what they just finished fixing.
What are your thoughts on this? _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

In all honesty, it's a word I don't really find offensive, but rather dated. It's one that I hesitate to use in person, for fear that some might be put off, but I think it has a unique quality that will set the tone for what you're trying to do.
And you've already paid the $$, so you're stuck with it.
If you kindly and firmly set the expectation that it's a term of mechanical endearment, I think the kind of people you want to attract won't be put off, any more than some other bike forum traditions do in other sub-cultures. FF's come to mind... not something I'd readily call someone to their face, but I take a mildly preverse pride in being one from time to time.
And remember above all, the internet does not define who we are... we do.
Use it as tongue in cheek, and I think the majority of the people you attract will as well. _________________ www.tidewaterforge.com |

Chris writes;

That is so true. A word is a noise referring to a concept and the keeper of the concept is us. A dictionary is a history of the concepts the word-noise refers to, that's all, it is not setting anything in concrete.
At the end of the day it is us, the daily users of a living language, who connote or know the meanings, and they do change with place, times and importantly context.
Back to your wenches Gwen.
As you pointed out, it is in a particular context that the 'wrenchin wenches' occurs. It is this context which governs the meaning here, to a large extent.
So your intention of an informal, welcoming and community approach ie the beers in the garage after a Tech day, sets the meaning here IMHO.
Yes I think it is a cute name for a welcome idea, namely the empowerment and dissemination of knowledges and techniques of a hitherto, pretty much gender bound occupation.
In Oz wench is a light-hearted and perfectly acceptable way of referring to easy-going gals.
So the name gets a thumbs up from me. |

We even have beer wenches here but they got banned from the gabba cricket ground dammit.
Perhaps you could have a section called "Les be friends" I'm happy to moderate that part for you!
Seriously though you would need to plug it in a few forums including ADV, you girls are thin on the ground! _________________ K1100RS '97

ADV, the terrible fritos, my Gigabikes forum, the honda Rebel foum (lots of women choose that as a first bike), Maximum, what's left of the CW forums, Britbikes... I'm sure there are others, but once you've got it set up and ready for business, we can start an el Grande awareness campaign. _________________ www.tidewaterforge.com |

Thank you Chris.
I'm in the process now of researching site templets and colors and content sub-forum.
I told Jon it we'll go slow and get it right so this will not go live until early next year.
Jon said he could optimize the site for web hits but a 'get out the word' Champagne would be cool and sweet. Right now I'm in the process of joining every M/F I can. When the site is live I'm goin to post it on all the forums (with a Mod approval so as not to look like a spammer)
The next step will be to make a FB page the way Smugmug and others have done. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Hi Shogs !!
Hey nothing I like better than being shown a "thing or two" by people in the know, male or female, makes no diff ! I'm looking forward to how it develops !! I KNOW you will be very successful with this undertaking, and while I think of it, the VIRAGO Tech forum ( http://www.viragotechforum.com ) has a very large female membership, plus a forum section devoted to them by them !! Give it a shot there as well !
Also looking forward to seeing you again in May if not sooner....

I came up with this last night.
It needs LOTS of cleaning and stuff. It's just printed, tweeked, copied and taped together.
In an effort to keep the site brand neutral, I'll be removing the '3/4' as well.
This is the layout I came up with...any thoughts on any of this?
Rough Outline
Howdy Folks - Introductions
Bikes
Show Off Your Rides -
Ride Reports -
The Garage - Wheels, Steering, Brakes, and Suspension -
Fuel and Exhaust -
Engines and Transmission -
Electrical and Accessories -
Frame, Fairing, Fit and Finish -
Penny and Redneck Tech
Tools and Tool Kits -
Paints and Coatings -
Electrical -
Tips, Tricks and Resources -
Wrenching Stories -
Hooking up - Mentors and Apprentices
Up-coming Tech Days - 'Nuff Said
The Sprocket - (nothing under this can be indexed by search engines or viewed by non-members)
Through Our Eyes -
The Porch - _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Gwen,
Great start! Like the "Craftswoman"
slight hijack I have a certain young lady here who thinks that turning wrenches is something dad does- NOT her. I think that with the new bike lift SHE is gonna' do the preseason prep on her Kawasaki. _________________ John & Cathy
