In the process of dimantling the K1100Lt for painting. My question is the frame paint, there is a lot of blistering and under the blisters is rust. My first thought was the bike is 18, so what do you expect. However, I just brought a 2002 R1150RS home today. I bought it 2 months ago and just now got the time to trailer it home. When I started to look it over closely it has the same frame paint issue as the 8 year older k1100lt. Is this an issue with all BMW bikes, or just specific years? Is there an easy way to correct this? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated, I do not like the idea of stripping the frame to clean and repaint it.

It really depends on how it is taken care of. My 96 LT has no frame paint issues.

Hi Lee...

I'm with Rich.! I have a '76 R100 as well as a "K" bike and others and I have no frame paint issues even on the '76. I garage all my bikes and wipe them down after riding in the rain. So far so good... I have a neighbor with a Harley and a newer Vulcan who keeps his bikes outdoors even in winter. Though sheltered and covered, he has paint spalling patches on both bikes on the lowest portions of the frames. To my way of thinking then, this is not a BMW specific issue.. others may disagree of course. I've seen many bikes, all makes, with frame paint problems and rust just as you describe.

Best regards and good luck.......// Ernie in NH
