|
|
After putting in a new center fairing bracket on my 93 k11lt, I found a piece of the center fairing tab that a bolt from the upper center bracket screws into busted and laying on the floor. There is enough mass around it to attempt to glue the plastic/fiberglass piece back in place but have no idea what the strongest glue would be for this. Any suggestions? What material is the center fairing made of? _________________ 93 K1100LT

Do you have any pictues of the broken part?
As to your question, I'm not sure.
On my RS the belly fairing is a plastic that looks like it's reinforced with fiberglass.
If I were in your place I use fiberglass and resin and reinforce the fracture with a plate/sheet of alumimun on the inside. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I have always used JB Weld when I needed to modify or repair my farings. It has not let me down. _________________ Communique via Garmin ZUMO 665 via HTC DROID Incredible ADR6300 via The Spoken Word Talk to Text |

I'm going with Shogs on this one. Get a fiberglass repair kit from the auto parts store and do several layers, then several layers more.
I'd pull the main fairing bracket off of the steering head and use that as a guide to make sure it's properly aligned as the fiberglass sets. Otherwise you'll run more risk of your repair being under stress when the fairing is installed on the bike.
Also use a fairly big patch of fiberglass to distribute the force as much as possible. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'd take a pic, but it's at my brothers heated garage about 45 minutes away. What is the fairing made of? Is it super plastic or a plastic fiberglass mix? Does it matter?
The chunk that came out of the fairing is about 1X1 inch and a quarter to a half inch thick. I would want the strongest mix possible for strength as it wouldn't be visible.
Advantage of fiberglass mix would be building up layers and adding strenth going out a couple of inches from the chunk. _________________ 93 K1100LT

It's some special fiberglass-ish German crap. I've done several repairs on body parts with fiberglass and all have held up.
Doesn't hurt to score up the inside surface with a Dremel or whatever ahead of time to maximize adhesion. Then get it really clean with rubbing alcohol or whatever. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

That's some good shit. I always forget about it until I've tried all the other glues in my drawer. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I used fiberglass resin and mat to fix mine 25,000 miles ago and it is still holding great. The thing about the fiberglass resin is it will absorb some into the exposed fairing material which makes for a titer bond. Just make sure yo have all the paint removed and use a larger grit sandpaper to roughen up the fairing. On using JB weld, I love the stuff but I think the fiberglass is better for this situation. _________________ Rich

Just go to Napa or any other auto parts store and look for a fiberglass repair kit. <$20. It's not a specialty product. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I used a 2-part epoxy made specifically for fiberglass repair when I reattached the mounting tab on my K75S fairing (the one behind the turn signal that loves to break.) It held great for the remaining 25k I owned the bike, and probably still is. That said, it really didn't carry much stress/weight unlike the tab it sounds like you are describing - for that I will jump on the bandwagon and agree that having fiberglass mat is a great addition.
Beware that some of those kits are of horrible quality, especially the one sold at Pep Boys, made in China generically bad crap.
If you have a West Marine nearby they make an awesome kit of very high quality materials that has the added bonus of being designed specifically for high-stress extreme environments. I have used this kit and it is simply great stuff (even comes with the epoxy mixing sticks and cups, nitrile gloves and a mini squeegee - about $35 to $40 if I remember right.) _________________

I also have some fairing repair to be made on my '95. Not sure when I'm going to do it now.
Having gotten married in Sep and them all(wife and 4 kids) moving in I don't have my basement work area or garage at this point.
I am going the fiberglass kit route as well when I get there.
My break is along the bottom of the RH mirror mount. The issue there will be to not get the fiberglass so think that I can't put the storage bucket back in. _________________ Ride safe.

So I told my dad we should use fiber glass repair and not jb weld, but he had already used jb weld. We did reinforce around the edges with epoxy and fiberglass mat stuff. The fairing is solid as can be.
Thanks for the help. _________________ 93 K1100LT
