Can anyone confirm the meaning of the ABS warning lights (ABS 1)? Should they be on solidly when the ignition is turned on, and flashing if there is a fault?
I've had to do an ABS reset once in the past, but since then have had no problems - until I bought an Optimate charger. After leaving the bike for 3 weeks with the Optimate connected, I now have the flashing ABS lights and fault code 7, and can't clear the fault. |

Sounds like your ABS brain might be fried. Try resetting it every few days and it MAY come back to life. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Fried? By using an Optimate?
Any tips on resetting? I tried grounding pin2, then switching on and pressing the ABS switch for 8 seconds, and also holding the button down while switching on. Neither have worked. |

If it's a "smart" charger that shouldn't kill the ABS brain. I run my bikes on Battery Tender Jr. tenders and have no issues. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Tis common for an ABS 1 brain to fry to code 7, my 93 K did that, replaced the brain, then sold the bike for an ABS2 model. A duff battery usually causes this. Sometimes they recover. _________________ Regards Tim,

Anyone? The instructions at http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/abs-reset.shtml
state 'If both ABS lights flash together, you are OK'.
My lights are flashing together, but never stop flashing, even when the battery has been charged, or after a run. And I can't remember what the lights did before - come on solid and go off after a few yards, or flash then go off.
In the meantime, I've applied the black tape mod... |

The lights flash together until you ride off and it has a chance to test the sensors. If you're getting an error code at the diagnostic plug then it's in fault mode. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks. I'd forgotten if they were meant to flash or not. I've now tried to do a reset about 20 times, but no luck - they don't stop flashing, and it shows the fault code (7?). I'll have to think about getting a new battery, although it's only a few months old.
I'm suspecting the Optimate, but I understand a lot of people use them without problems. |

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for awhile? Sometimes that will reset things.
Not as likely, but the gap clearances at the sensors can cause issues. After a rear wheel brake rebuild, I was getting the flashing lights. With the help of Scott Anderson, removing one of the shims got the clearance back in spec and now the lights go off right away after rolling just a few feet.

I've tried that, but only for 10 minutes. I'll try it for longer.

The front wheel was out for a new tyre recently, but the ABS was working afterwards (until I connected an Optimate for 3 weeks). |

According to the Optimate website, it is a "smart" charger that will charge and then maintain a battery, for months even, just like a battery tender.
It shouldn't have hurt anything. I keep mine plugged in a battery tender all the time it is parked in the garage, year round.
I often get an ABS flashing issue whenever I remove and re-install the wheels. Maybe check the gap clearance at the front sensor and see if it's in spec. Maybe even loosen the front wheel and jiggle it around and re-tighten.
I find it's usually something simple and not a major component failure. _________________ Steve

The battery is now disconnected from the bike, and hooked up to the charger for the next 3 weeks. If the fault is still there when I next use the bike, I'll check the front wheel sensor.
Thanks for all the suggestions. |

FIX the problem, don't cover it up!
(although the check engine light on my Silverado is on and after the shop turning it off twice, it comes back on, so, I'm thinking the black tape might be the cure (rather than the $87 "smoke test" to find out which $300 component has failed!) _________________ Steve

I use an 0ptimate charger on my ABS11 equipped K1100RS and it is hooked up continuously while in my garage, without problems.I have used Optimates since the early 90's and have never had an issue with any of them, for what its worth. _________________ 1993(94 MODEL) K1100RS IN ASTRAL BLUE

Update:
Finally got it fixed I tried a new reset switch and second-hand relays - no change. Then the bike went in for a service (not a BMW dealer, but they seem to know their stuff). So I asked them to take a look at the ABS, and they found fault code 5 (low battery voltage), and reset it. Strange, coz I found code 7.
It's been connected to the Optimate for another 4 weeks since then, and the ABS is still working.
What I'd like to know is (a) how I got a different fault code and (b) why my attempts at resetting didn't clear the fault.
Anyway, it's working, and the lights go out as soon as the bike moves (even backwards!). |

Glad its fixed, its a real headache when you cant track it down !
One trick I have heard of for "fixing" problem ECUs,is to put them in the Freezer overnight, in a sealed plastic bag, remove them and allow them to reach room temperature and try them again.A friend of mine in the trade says it often works. Apparently the process erases temporary fault codes but does not affect the" burnt in" software? I guess you have lost nothing if you think its fried anyway ?

I've seen the seven and then five thing before on K75 ABS I brains which are quite similar to ours. Maybe it was "stacking" fault codes and a double reset was in order. (Just a guess.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

or your the planets were aligned differently when you tried a reset.
(after having a '94RS- briefly, a '93RS and now a '92RS and multiple ABS 1 and 2 faults, I now believe in voodoo, witchcraft and the Loch Ness monster)
