|
|
Does anyone remember the original spot where the battery made its ground?
My ground is on the battery/ABS tray and it seems like a lot of potential for high resistance build up having to go through four contacts for the tray and then four more contacts for the cross brace underneath the tray.
Well I tried to make a .PDF of the IPC but I wasn't successful to show what I am posting about.
There are a total of nine contact points before the ground gets to the frame and/or engine.
On prior threads I am fighting a charging problem and while the generator is getting looked at I decide to look at my grounds to see how healthy they were. Where my battery ground was connected was a little corroded but I don't think bad enough to give me this problem.

Those electrons can be awfully elusive animals. It doesn't take much increase in circuit resistence to cause big losses in voltage and current so a corroded battery earth can be a big problem. If you have any doubts about the earthing i'd run a new cable straight to a good spot on the engine block. In my experience these problems usually come in clusters, lots of high resistence joints and bad earths. It's just aging, but the motronic and ABS computers add an extra dimension to the failure possibilities Every few years I disconnect , clean all my electrical connectors and coat with dielectric grease.( 93 K1100RS) so far so good.

The wire are connected to the gearbox on the left hand side just above
the shaft for the gearlever. The grounding point has a 6 mm tread for
a hex bolt.At that point another wire goes to a grounding point below the fueltank and connect to the frame.

I know that for both of my LT's the main ground is at the rear mounting bolts of the starter. Where it bolts to the transmission casing.
I would have thought that the RS would have grounded at the same place. _________________ Ride safe.

93s ground to the tranny above the gear shift lever like K75s and K100s. 94 and later bikes have several grounds and are a tad more complicated. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well that is what I am hearing so it I guess it is "pick your favorite spot". I tried it on the right side under the bracket that holds the footrest/brake pedal plate. It is right on the transmission. The ground cable must have been shortened over the years and that is all I got to work with. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Moondog, there is always the option of getting yourself a generic premade cable(longer one) to ground the battery to wherever you wish. _________________ Ride safe.

Well that is what I have done. I took what cable I had and ran it down under the right foot rest plate. Short run and good contact with the tranny. Seems over the years there hasn't been a defined point were BMW wanted the ground cable run to or over the years this cable got shortened too much. Who knows. Where it is now will work fine. A ground is a ground is a ground _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!
