Well I'll start this thread off with a few pics from the beginning of my trip.
It started at Rydor's place on Friday.
Saturday he needed some rubber replaced on the poserbrick so he got a loaner bike for the day. After a little dusting off and some fuel he was all smiles.
Went for some miles up and down the Miss River on both the Missouri and Illinois sides.
Had a little moisture but not too bad. We went back for the poserbrick for the rest of the day ride.
Here's a shot we had to take for Qwen.
We can't forget a Johnny shot.
Sunday put me on the road to Audi's place in Atlanta.
Rain was the order for 80% of the day so the camera stayed in the majority of the time.
Managed to get a bridge shot. This one's over the Miss river into Cape Girardeau
Made it to Charleston SC on Monday, again more rain. Fewer storms but those that were out there were bigger and heavier rain.
Point of interest here for me was Patriots Point. This place is very cool if your into WWII history of any kind.
Spent all day Today(Tuesday) here at P.P. If you are anywhere near this place I highly recommend a visit.
More to come. _________________ Ride safe.

On Wednesday afternoon I came back from a shake down ride to find Scott Anderson waiting in my driveway. He came up from South Carolina. He spent the night and rode up with me the next day, just like last year.
We headed out the next morning and had beautiful weather all the way up, mid 70's, sunny and no wind. We arrived about 4 that afternoon and several folks were already there.
That night we went and took over the local Mexican place.
The next morning we took over the local breakfast place. It was fun explaining to the Kiwi's what grits were and that if you wanted hot tea, you needed to be real clear or you'd get iced tea, which they did not care for.
The first lady of Hungry Mother and official photog, Gwen. Note the spelling of "Kountry", our kind of place!
That day we went riding in the mountains and enjoyed the twisties until is started to rain right as we got onto a really twisty section that had gravel and fine mud on it. My rear tire slipped out in a couple of places and scared me to death, but I made through (barely) with some encouragement.
Back at the cabins and dried off, we enjoyed some great tex/mex/southwestern cooking by Chris. (Big guy on the right)
And then much talking, drinking and BSing!
And door prizes!
The man, the myth, the legend, K11OG #1, Ted Verrill.
The next day we had better weather and went back to the breakfast place again in smaller groups and then went back up in the mountains. I don't have any pictures of Saturday because I lost my camera, in my tank bag! I put it in a sunglasses bag and didn't remember where I put it and didn't realize that I had put it in that bag. Thanks to all of those who tore up their cabins helping me look for it that night. D'oh!
The most memorable part of that day was when we went up to the (or near) the top of Mt. Rogers, the highest mountain in Virginia, at 5,729 ft. You could only get close to the top on the road and had to hike the last bit, which we did not. But, Audi suggested that we take the bikes up a pretty rough gravel road to the top of nearby Whitetop Mountain.
| Quote: | | Whitetop Mountain is the second-highest mountain in Virginia. The highest navigable road in Virginia leads to its summit. A hiking trail starts at Elk Garden on Virginia 600. The summit provides panoramic views of three states. |
It was about a mile or two up a pretty steep gravel and mud road with good size rocks and puddles. The kind of road you would not likely take a car up, but a truck would do fine. It was the most off roading I've done on the K and it was quite fun. I can't wait for some others to post some pics.
That night it was time for Phil's famous spaghetti, which was great. Then more drinking, and BSing, which we're all quite good at.
Up early on Sunday and headed out at 7:30, got home at 2:30, about 380 miles, about 1,000 total for the whole trip.
Look what happened while I was gone, boys will be boys!
Great time and a big thanks to all those who put it together, especially Gwen and Jim. Thanks also to Sugarhill for selling me his Aeroflow which made the long trip much more comfortable. And Scott for riding up with me. Thanks to Phil and Chris for cooking awesome food.
Can't wait to see the other pictures, especially the off-road ones. |

My turn....
Our trip to HMIII was interesting- to their credit, Paul and Darryl managed to stay on the RIGHT HAND side of the road- despite that they insist that they always ride on the right side of the road at home and we ride on the wrong side. HUH?
My whole HM odyssey started the Sunday before when we met the boys from NZ down in southern NH. That's Saltcreek on the left, my Cathy next to him, the NZ/USA trio and then Skip on the far right
The two guys came and stayed with us until Wed morning when we hit the road.
We broke the trip into 500 and 400 mile days (that's 800k and 640k- I learned to do quick USA/metric conversions in my head- I am even getting better at F to C temperatures)
Somewhere in Va.
Breakfast on Friday morning (pay no attention to the Kawasaki )
We never did get a total count of K bikes there since for the 3-4 days people arrived and went at miscellaneous times.
Some HM folks could only manage to raise a single finger to wave
while some waved with the entire hand
Since Gwen was so kind as to go ahead after Saturday breakfast and wait in a corner to take our pictures, I figured we needed one of her- I caught Beemerchick first
then Gwen with Paul behind
Saturday afternoon had people and bikes going in several directions. Rydor stumbled out of a much needed snooze and felt the need for some corner therapy. Darryl and I were happy to tag along- although at a slight distance back Sean did wait for us at a convenient turn off
We even got a well timed "crikey" from Darryl (to amuse us northerners) when Christopher showed us a near disaster with his rear brake- and Paul bailed him out with parts from the other side of the Earth
Have more but lets see some other contributions _________________ John & Cathy

OK all, here's my whole album.
http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk91/electro_handyman/HM3/
A few highlights from it.
Wed night ready for sleep.
Thur morn, ready to ride.....
Finally after a week on the road(for me anyway), the final destination.
Good food, seeing old friends again, and meeting new friends.
Just look at all this hardware, together in one place.
From Mount Rogers,
up this road I wouldn't drive my car up,
to Whitetop Mountain.
The real capper to a good ride.
Already can't wait till next year. _________________ Ride safe.

I'm VERY dissapointed overall with the quality of the pictures I took.
There is much I must learn about this camera.
I was able to salvage about 300-ish.
There were rides

Explaining grits to the Kiwis mightn't have been too hard, but explaining why there weren't any beers on the breakfast table may have been a bit more difficult!!
Great photos folks, fabulous scenary!! _________________ K1100RS '97
