|
|
I was considering carrying these in the event of an unexpected breakdown on an upcoming trip.
http://www.canyondancer.com/
Are these recommended? My BMW mechanic says he's used them many times but the instructions specifically say not to use them on rubber mounted bars.
Also, the newer Canyon Dancer 2 model uses cups on the ends but I've read that these can bend the bar end mounts.
How do you guys tie down your bikes?
Thanks for any input.

I tie them down at the fork brace. If you cinch down the forks too much you can pop fork seals. IMO it's better to let the bike ride on it's own suspension. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Soft ties over the fork brace - then connect your tie downs to the soft ties.
I pull the rear of the bike down snug - very little tension on the front. _________________ Jim

Ditto on what Drake and Jim said about the tying the front at the fork brace.
I tie the rear at the tire/wheel so the whole bike can then "float" on it's own suspension. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks for the replies.
When you say "at the fork brace" do you mean immediately above the fender, tucking the soft ties between the fender and the fork leg?
And then do you extend the ties at 45 degrees to the deck and to the front along the fork legs or to the sides (to front of truck bed or side of truck bed).
And just to clarify, are soft ties the short straps with loops on each end?
Thanks
Steve

No - not immediately above the fender - higher up.
The Razor trailer I use has a chock that does a pretty good job of holding the front. I used to pull the front down tight - but didn't think that was any good for the forks.
Get some soft ties similar to these http://store.rampconnection.com/product.php?xProd=6896 - loop them around the triple tree - pull one loop through the other loop, then you have a loop hanging free to connect your tie down to.
I use soft ties on the rear frame and snug the bike down at the back. _________________ Jim

If you connect the ties to the lower triple tree, then aren't you still compressing the front forks?

I tie mine just above the fender, so as to not compress the forks. _________________ Ride safe.

Just above the fender. I tie one end of the tie-down forward on each side and one end rearward. That provides both forward and back stability as well as left/right stability. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
