This is theoretical.......
After yesterday's trackday and skdonlan's question about why I didn't ride the BMW there- plus my response about kinda' not wanting to guide the K weight around an actual race circuit-
IF (and remember this is THEORETICAL ) I was to reduce my RS down to very naked status. A.k.a. racing weight- no bodywork, no lights, nothing that is needed just to pass state roadworthy inspection.......
Could I get it down to a non-Hippo weight? Anybody have a feeling as to how much weight the bike could lose?

I'm guessing not that much, maybe 30-40 lbs. (?)
You still have the engine, the transmission, the frame, wheels and tires, electronics, ABS systems, coolant system, pumps, etc...
You could trade it in on a K75 and loose more.....
I think the terms "K" and "racing weight" are mutually exclusive. _________________ Steve

Wrong bike for that mate. I would put it up for a trade for a good track bike though, I'm sure you would get some hits for a nice Japanese or Italian bike.
If you really wanted to the exhaust would be a good place to start, although I can't condone it....your RS is a work of art and it would be a fkn crime to butcher it for track days. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I'd say more thenb 40 lbs. Those ABS I modulators are pretty heavy. Also go to a half battery like an Odyssey PC680. I think that's gets another 6 or 7 lbs. Swapping in some aluminum bars without bad ends might save another pound or two. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I thought about that many times. Don't ruin it by trying to make it something it's not. If you want sportier, buy something else. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

Why ??????????????????????????
The guy obviously likes his Kay and what it has to offer - he just wants more.
I thought the US would be the hotbed of modification - Hot Rodders were around a long time before restorers...................
OK weight saving - I'm aiming for 100lbs saving for my Streetfighter [ K100] and around 75lbs for my K1100RS Race Replica.
I've broken several [ 7 ] project / donor bikes down in the past 18 months and sold off the parts not required for conversion - Fairing complete, ABS, seat and cowl, rear lamps / mudguard, footrest hangers and rear pegs, side panels.
The ABS weighs 18.5 kgms [ UPS docket ], the fairing 22 kgms - so you're already in excess of a 55 lbs weight saving. Haven't weighed it yet, but I agree the silencer must be made out of lead ! It's at least 5 times heavier than the Akropovic can I replaced it with.
Why do I insist on doing this to a priceless classic? First off it is by no stretch of the imagination a classic and secondly [ here in the UK ] they are priced - less than comparable alternates. I can buy a mechanically good / cosmetically challenged K1100 for less than $1000 - my last one [ L1100LT ] was $600. Best buy - a 28K mile K100RT ['88] for $150.
Why not just buy a Japanese Rice Rocket??? Yea - lets all be different together.
I'm not certain about US road legal requirements - but ALL my projects must be capable of passing the UK MOT test - the annual tech inspection.
Just get out there and do it John - there'll be many other "works of art" for the purists to sit and polish. [/img] _________________ Beachcomber '93 K1100RS / '93 K1100LT and several K100's |

I'll try again with pix - sorry I'm better at fixing bikes than working a PC
Ahhaaa it worked.
OK the bike is in mock up form, just to prove out all the newly made parts. It will be stripped down in the next several weeks for paint, powder coating, upholstery, etc. It's getting either K1100RS 3 spoke wheels, or 5 Spoke Wobblies - haven't decided yet.

My first thought is to try and do a swap with someone that is looking to do the opposite- 750 to 800 or so used sport bike for my RS
I REALLY liked riding the Ducati "L" twin on the track- having the lower RPM torque was great at pulling my tail out of some corners. Must be why more than 1/2 of the 60-70 bikes there were Ducs. But it would also be great to have something that I would feel too bad about watching slide down the pavement.
Gotta' put some think/search time in here. _________________ John & Cathy

Replacing the OEM exhaust system - this one was developed for K100, the company I am dealing with have subsequently replicated the 4 x downpipes for replacement k100 or for the K1100.
This one was the prototype, production models are highly polished [ all Stainless Steel ]. My underseat system for the Race Rep was developed from this to the same high standard

I offer my 93 K1100 RS as a test bed bike for the US.
I pay shipping, take pictures, write report, follow up as requested when requested.
Full system returned when requested or purchased at a mutually agreed upon cost taking into consideration fair labor exchange for test services.
I work cheap.
Just throwing it out there.
Ya never know what may happen. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

+1
The power to weight ratio is only one problem.
K1100's are top-end-happy.
The real issue is the bike is heavy from the inside out.
i.e. According to BMW, the cam followers weigh 11 grams (0.388 ounces), almost 50% lighter than what BMW uses in its K-series.
So it's not about the weight you could strip from the outside. The real weight issues are much deeper.
Max Power 100.00 HP at 7500 RPM
Max Torque 104.90 Nm at 5500 RPM
Power/Weight Ratio 0.36 Hp/Kg
BMW S1000RR
Power 193hp
Torque 83lbft
Power to weight ratio 0.95 hp/kg _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Nice try Jim !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, I'll put it to the powers that be. You never know...............
I have to dissagree about the unsuitability of the Kay as a base for Track day / competition, and I guess a guy called Cobas would agree.
Back in '84 they were getting 120 + bhp from an essentially stock engine - and it was bulletproof. They won various 24 Hour events against "superior" and more "suitable" Japanese machinery.
I guess it's all down to that Pioneering spirit eh guys? _________________ Beachcomber '93 K1100RS / '93 K1100LT and several K100's |

The one thing that is a BIG negative about using the RS for trackdays is that the primary speedway where I would be using it (where we were on Monday) is tight and twisty with only one true straight.
And I saw, firsthand, how my son's 620 Monster easily beat up on large heavy machines within the second or third turn after the straight.
I am not completely discounting using it- no bodywork left other than the tank and a modified tail section- a true "naked" K1100S. Of course it would be a chance to rid the bike of that #@$!^%$!! airbox.
Stay tuned. _________________ John & Cathy
