Guys,

I'm really need of help here - very Mad after working for almost 2 months. Replaced main engine seal, clutch o ring, clutch, etc. Twisted Evil

Bike finished at 0800 AM and when I turn the key on, I get no start from starter button. Crying or Very sad

Battery tested to 12.73
ABS Flashes
No brake lites
Idiot lites that work are: Nuetral, Radiator, Oil lites all turn on (like Drakes LED Kit - Cool!)
Headlites work; turn signals work.

Checked the fuel line electrics - plugged in
Checked the brain, wires to batteries, OK

No sound of anything! No fuel pump whirring...NOTHING!

My thoughts:
1) Maybe I installed the Kickstand Kill switch wrong?
2) Maybe when I completely removed the ABS and had a devil of a time getting the rear brakes to bleed that the ABS is off?
3) When I tried to install bar backs maybe I pulled a wire off the starter swtich.

HELP me start this logically. I have put the battery on charger.

Bummed Beemer Rider Sad

That would be where I would look first based upon the symptoms you describe, and the fact you removed it to do your work.

You want the switch to close when the stand is up. You should also be able to hear it "click".

The other thing to also look at is the ign kill switch, it will give you the same symptoms if it's off.

Find the connector for the side stand switch and jump it on the bike side of the connector.

It may be that it's not closing. Instead of trying to move the switch what I did is put a short piece of vacuum hose on the tang that presses on the switch.

The sidestand switch doesn't disable the starter though, only the fuel pump. I would certainly check the kill switch first.

I wouldn't worry about the ABS yet. That wouldn't prevent the starter from turning over either.

After that, hmmm, sounds like you're on the battery issue, not really sure what else to suggest other than double check your ground connections.

Starter relay??

The other way around Steve, the sidestand will kill the starter, but the kill switch won't.

You got me thinking, since don't hardly ever use my kill switch, so I double checked on one of mine. The starter will turn when only the kill switch is off.
With the side stand out, no starter.

My bet is on the sidestand switch. I found out a week or so ago that the brake light will not work with the sidestand down. I had my bikes side by side for a comparison picture of the brake lights. When I saw one of the brake lights was not functioning, I wasted about a half hour investigating when I looked over and saw the sidestand was also down. Raised the sidestand and on came the brake light.

That fools mechanics all the time. Every place I've had my K11LT serviced at one time or another has told me my brake light wasn't working. The first time I was confused, but figured it out in about 15 seconds. Now I don't even look, I just ask them if the sidestand was down.

Whatchu tallking about Willis?

Side stand down, I get the starter, but no fuel pump. Kill switch off I get no starter, but not sure about the pump as it's not hooked up at the moment.

The mention of no brake lights does bring the sidestand switch more into play, bypass it and see what happens.

Interesting, Shocked both my LT's are just the opposite of your RS. No fuel pump or brake lights either way, but starter will turn with the kill switch off, not with the side stand out.
Maybe it's a wiring change post '93? Or an RS thing?

Okay I got the book out and looking at the schematics the '93 and earlier RS side stand switch wiring is different than the '94 later RS/LT's.

On the '93 and earlier, the side stand switch is in series between the motronic relay and the fuel pump relay, so if the stand is out----no fuel pump or injectors(same +12G/W wire from FP relay).

On the '94's and later the side stand switch provides a ground source for the motronic and the starter relay, so if the stand is out---no ground for the relay to operate.

Well Steve, you were right, about your bike. A learning experience for all.

you might want to check the neutral/gear selector wires on the tranny, my neutral light wiring shorted and i had to bypass the light to get started on the road. just jump the solonoid.

K1100OG,

Many thanks for your feedback. It turned out to be the sidestand kill switch / sensor.

I had installed it incorrectly and it was "Open" all the time; fixed it and now the bike is dead with the sidestand down, but fires up with the sidestand up.

And I was OVERJOYED to hear the motor crank and she fired up the 2nd attempt time.

It was a sweet sound to "Hot Jalepeno" purring.

Now install the seat and I can ride again!

Hooray!

Of course she did, she's as reliable as a brick! Smile

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Enjoy the ride!
