|
|
I have always noticed that my windshield was a little uneven, with the right side being a little lower then the left.
As I was installing a new windshield I noticed the the left strut was about 1/4" higher then the right.
I took the windshield off and pulled the lifting mechaninism out to take a look. After studying it for a long time I can not figure how to adjust the struts, or cables to have a even lift. I did notice that the red knob has some arrows on it ,but it won't turn.
Clymers manual is no help, and I am stumped.
If anyone knows the adjustment, it would be one of you guys.
Need some help.

There is a fairly good description of the windshield mechanism in the genuine workshop manual, which can be found from http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4715&highlight=workshop+manual
IIRC you need to remove the actuator motor, set it to the lowest position and set both the actuator cables to their minimum position so the windscreen support brackets are sitting on the rubbers. Then replace the motor and you should be good to go.
While you have it apart, probably a good idea to clean and lube everything; mine had collected a bit of rubbish in 13 years Allow a good few hours for the job! _________________ David, owner of:

I think I rebuilt my windshield mechanism about 3 times. You need to make sure its the actual control cables and not the "holding" arms that the shield attaches to. Very often these will break or shift, you need to examine them with a fine-tooth comb.
If for sure it is the cables, dissemble the unit and take to motor out...should take you 5mins with an electric screwdriver. With the motor out you can move the cables freely. Lube them with a dry graphite or lithium grease (my preference) and re-install the motor with both cables "bottomed out" in the stays, if that makes any sense.
It also helps to take the rear piece off and visualize the mechanism while you put it up and down....very often you can find the abnormality.

And you need an odd screwdriver blade for some of the screws - I think it is posidrive, or torx or somesuch. Hopefully someone else will know the correct name; or maybe you'll jhve some laying around in a driver kit as I did. _________________ David, owner of:

I was having a similar problem, ended up buying on old motor assy for the worm drive gear that contacts the drive cables. The teeth on the gear were worn allowing the cables to slip. _________________ Ride safe.

Mine droops on the left side. The bracket is actually broken where the little pivot bolt goes in. Someday I may find new parts and fix it. For now, it will have to do.

I think any broken or compromised parts in this mechanism are a huge safety issue. imagine holding that screen out a car window at 70 mph. It is under extreme stress and probably underbuilt. _________________ Jim

Unfortunately broken windshield mechanism parts are pretty common. One of the bikes "Achilles heels", if you will. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Man, what great responses!
Another site, that shall remain anonimous, did not receive one response.
I was thinking about pulling the motor when I remembered that the last time I had the windshield off, I noticed that the right side had an extra mounting plaet. I just left it off and reassembled.
I dug the part out(no small task in my messy workshop) and mounted one plate on each side of the rubber gasket and that leveled the shield!
Thank you all again for the insights.

Nah, it can't come out. May collapse a little bit more but won't come out.
